The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 Episode 2 Last Christmas

No offense taken, I like to hear opposing sides! I definitely have a different view of all those situations. I watched the show before I read the books, and Jeremiah really is so different in the show. If I read the books first, I might not feel the same way, but for the 1st 2 seasons and no book knowledge I will always be Team Jer 100%. I need examples of him being manipulative, because I don't really recall any. I do appreciate not using the fireworks scene though LOL I can definitely see the signs of Jeremiah in seasons 1 and 2 being the type of person to shrug off responsibilities, but I felt it was never with anything huge. I feel like it was also shown that he was immature because Adam never trusted him with anything mature and always put the heavy things on Conrad. He kind of just fell into playing that role because that's who Adam saw him as, he never felt important enough for anyone to have focus on him, so he became the lovable goof ball, and Sus's sunshine boy. I don't think it was because he didn't care, I think it came from a place of pain. When it came time to step up and take care of Susannah after she became terminal he was the only one who did, Conrad and Adam were mia. He was even paying bills, doing house work, ect. with noones help. Which shows me that when things get real and serious, he will and can take control of important situations. That's why this whole college thing felt so weird and strange to me. I feel like he either would have acted like he didn't care, or would've figured out a way to still somehow walk. I don't remember the summer house situation the same way, I feel like they were both definitely trying to save it, Jer was even the one who went to see Aunt Julia with Belly to begin with. Plus Conrad actually was hiding things from him in both seasons, so I feel him lashing out at Conrad for not letting people have a say is valid. Susannah's sickness, the house sale, his feelings for Belly. Even though I understand Conrad felt he was protecting Jer, Jer made it clear he didn't feel that way, yet Conrad continued doing it. Jer literally begged Conrad and Belly to talk so they could figure out what they were and what feelings were involved before he even considered moving forward in a relationship. He also said he would walk away so they could be together if that's what they wanted and needed to happen. I feel like a few months at least had passed by the time they next all hung out, so I don't see why Jeremiah would feel any obligation whatsoever towards making sure Belly and Conrad felt comfortable around each other. According to them, there were absolutely no emotions in volved towards each other anymore. It's also not fair to say he didn't have that conversation with them just because we didn't see it happen.

I feel like you have a little bit of rose-colored glasses with Jere because he's so likable in the show. (I hope that's not offensive). The show humanizes and makes all the characters more likable, but at their core they all maintain their core flaws. Jere has shown a tendency to be this type of guy in the show. In the book, it's a flashing neon sign, but it's still in the show, just more subtle. Jere was the type of guy in season 1 that you could easily see in a frat, blowing off school, shrugging off responsibilities, not thinking about the consequences, not thinking of other's feelings, comfortable manipulating people and situations often, etc. When he cares about you, when he wants to impress you, when he's happy, he's super charming, sweet, fun, etc. He matured a little in season 2 and even in these first 2 episodes I see a little more of that. He was supportive of Belly going to Paris and didn't guilt trip her into staying, which I think is something season 1/2 Jeremiah might have done, so it's nice to see that even with the bad things he's doing, he's also grown and become more mature in other ways. That said, even the growing he did in season 2, didn't significantly change things. For example, in season 2, he dumped all the nitty, gritty, problem solving aspects of losing the summer house onto Conrad while also lashing out at Conrad for taking control of things and not letting people have a say. He was mature about insisting that Belly and Conrad talk at the end of season 2 and that this time he would be mature about it, but then we see in the flashback that the first time they spent time with Conrad after the motel, he was all over Belly without a thought to how Conrad, or even Belly, would feel. All his good qualities don't erase who he is and how he acts when he's angry and hurt, when he manipulates people to get what he wants (no, I don't mean the firework scene), when he disregards how his actions make other people feel because it's more convenient for him, etc. The same way I said that the good doesn't erase the bad, the bad doesn't erase the good. He's undeniably a likable character, but he's always shown the potential to be this guy, especially at this time in his life when he's still learning and finding himself. I don't want to make it seem like I'm saying only Jere has these faults. Belly and Conrad share some of these core flaws (and have their own individual ones),. We see the red flags Belly and Conrad have and how it affects them and others because the consequences of their decisions/feelings have rippled further and bigger than any of Jere's to date. His actions have always been like little pebbles in a pond, never making a true impression or splash because they're subtle, undermined, or overpowered. This is the first time Jere has been caught/called out for his poor actions and it's because cheating/not cheating on Belly and lying about it is a huge pebble in the water. I don't know if that last part makes sense at all, but I don't think they're forcing Jere to be a bad guy. I think they're finally highlighting his flaws like they do everyone else.
