Yes losing a kid is very tragic but that doesn´t excuse them being awful to their remaining kids. Like only criticising Maddie, Maddie having to parent Buck because their parents didn´t. Only showing affection for Buck when he got hurt etc. And while the dad said "we never blamed you"" I´m not sure I believe that? Because during the bike argument the mom said "We have a reminder staring us in the face every day, isn´t that enough?" so.... I think at least she absolutely blamed and resented Buck for "failing" to save Daniel. Them not having a "baby box" for Buck also said a lot. When he was a baby Daniel should have been still alive, I get that that time was difficult, but even before Daniel died they didn´t care enough about the new baby to keep mementos etc. Personally Buck´s real parents are absolutely Bobby and Athena, they have done so much more and shown him so much more affection and care than his parents ever did. I love the scene with Athena and how affectionate she sounds when she praised Buck. Besides the coping mechanism and hurting himself this also explains so much about his reckless tendencies in general, and why he was so frustrated when the leg thing happened and he couldn´t work. He never had unconditional love and felt like fire fighting is the one thing he CAN do and where he felt like he was enough. Seeing young Maddie and her being "in love" with Doug was also hard to watch. I love the detail by the way when Buck first shows up in the hospital. They never address it, but Maddie´s arm is broken, implying that that was probably something Doug did.
