As far as I remember a lot of the side character struggles are things the show added. Like for example Tara and Darcy, they dated and are Elle´s friends after she started going to girls school, that was pretty much all we got from them. Not too much about their personal lives. Darcy´s pronouns for example is almost definitely thanks to the actor. By the way after looking them up I just found out that besides they/them they also use he/him now. Love the perspective changes, and that moment with "Does Tori like me?" and "He is my favourite, I like him" was so cute.
