The Circle went down because Valentine "died", before Clary was even born, so in extension neither Alec nor any of the others could be involved with the Circle since it shutdown before they even existed. It´s just resurfacing now. The Bella Swan comparisons are SO fair! I like Clary but she absolutely falls into the stereotypes many female main characters fall into, especially in young adult/teen series. She is so special and important, everyone bends over backwards to help her etc. The way I understood the whole vampire/simon situation was, Kami broke "The Accords" by kidnapping a mundie. Pretty sure they knew already that Clary is Valentine´s daughter. Raphael disagreed about Kami´s plan, so he went against her, tricked her to leave and then helped the shadowhunters by giving Simon back, also to signal that he is at least somewhat on their side and could potentially be "trusted" About the "becoming a vampire" process. Jace mentioned it involves drinking vampire blood "but that´s not all" so there are more steps.
