I don't know if you remember Alvida's boat, it was a duck. This is because her name in japanese is spelled 'Ahiruda' (japanese people can't say the letter L), 'ahiru' translates to duck and if you read her name as 'ahiru da' with a space between 'ahiru' and 'da' it directly translates to "it's a duck". So she being ugly and than appearing again as a beautiful woman is a reference to the famous "Ugly duckling" story (a ugly duckling that ends up actually being a swan). One piece is filled with these kinds of references that are either lost on translation or simply too specific to get at first watch. Oda especially likes to play with name choices. -Nami: (her name directly translates to 'waves', a navigator called waves) -Ussop: his name and character are based on Aesop (greek storyteller known as 'the father of fables', supposed author of various famous fables including 'the boy who cried wolf' wich inspired Ussop's story) -Kaya: this one is a personal opinion, I think her name is greek inspired since she is related to Ussop. "Kaia" is an abreviation of a common greek name for women and it means purity, kindness, beauty and softness. I think it fits her character and personality. -Roronoa Zoro: He is inspired on a real life pirate that lived in the 1600s called François l'Olonnais (Roronoa is the 'japanised' way of pronouncing l'Olonnais) and the famous fictional swordsman Zorro. -Sanji: his name directly translates to '3 pm' wich is considered lunch time, a cook called 'lunch time'. These are all I could remember up until this point, as you move foward I may add more.

It's kind of expected that Buggy could be hit by lightning while standing at a tall place during a storm while holding a metal object (sword) above his head.
