I definitely got Blackbeard vibes, but without actually labeling him that I think they did a great job at conveying the fear!

The showrunners expected the viewer to know who he was, that’s why the dramatic pause after he says his name. And back when this was airing, he was in a lot of the promos, so people knew he was Blackbeard. Years later it gets lost on new viewers. It does him a disservice as you don’t fully appreciate the respect and fear an awe that the people around him feel, without knowing that he’s Blackbeard.
