Ever since the innies escaped at the end of Season 1, it was always Helena. It wasn't Helly who said the "night gardener". That was actually Helena. They were never going to bring Helly back after her speech at the Lumon party. They needed to infiltrate the innie team and learn who they talked to. She discovered via the tape the romantic connection and knew she could get Mark back to work on the project again. It's why "Helly" (actually now Helena) choose to stay at Lumon when given the opportunity to leave. She knew she could get Mark to stay by searching for his wife. The real Helly always wanted to leave. Helena didn't anticipate being asked what she saw so she made it up on the fly. You can see it in that scene and why it was so flimsy. But then she became trapped by her answer and Irving, who seems to have a detective's or military member's mind (deciphers logically), started asking questions. Woe helped him put it all together.

2025-10-24 16:49:07 +0000 UTCCool facts: 1) at the computer terminal, the numbers flashed a picture of Helly and 2) the numbers, corresponded to their alphabetical equivalent, spelled EAGAN. So Woe led him to connect the dots that Helly was an Egan. I don't think Helena really wanted to have that experience but she noticed it on tape and studied it as a means to manipulate Mark once she infiltrated the innies. Glad you liked the episode and Irv is tremendous!
