everyone has much more eloquent thoughts so i’ll just agree. this episode is in my top 3 along with the s1 and s3 finales. absolutely perfect episodes of tv. one of my favorite little details that i didn’t notice until a few rewatches in is when brian first gets to babylon after the bombing and he’s looking around, the camera repeatedly pans to anyone blonde, showing how he’s specifically looking for justin.

I will honestly say that this is prob my favorite "I love you" in cinema. There's a strong reason Brian/Justin is one of my favorite couples of all time. The writers took the idea of character arcs + slow burn and said "we will SHOW you what those words mean" as far as Brian goes. It's been building for 5 seasons. Since s1, the audience knows Brian has fallen in love with Justin, & its frustrating that Brian can never say it but, like Justin, you get why and come to accept it and its the end the series so maybe he will really never say it. But then Brian is faced with losing Justin... to death. AGAIN. This is the 2nd time Brian has almost lost Justin permanently, the first time is when Brian admitted to himself he was in love with Justin, and this time is when he could finally bring him to say it out loud. And I think Brian was always TERRIFIED that if he were to say it out loud. He'd lose Justin. But here he is, having almost lost Justin to death once more, and he realized he HAS to say it, because of every reason he never said it before. He's terrified of losing him and he almost did, not because he pushed him away like he always does (which he can accept because Brian is super self-destructive) but because, like in s1, someone almost took Justin away from him violently, and now he doesn't want to lose him ever again, even to his own self-destruction. He just has to say it because he should have a long time ago. And I just really love it. It's such a BEAUTIFUL and well done story and I have so much more to say about it but i have to wait for the final ep of the series for THAT rant lmao

The way Queer as Folk does these types of episodes is so amazing! Justin’s prom, Ted going to rehab, the election, even the Library Ride, they have always known how to end a season. The tension of all the couples splitting up is so nerve-wrecking, cause like you said, you could just feel that something wasn’t right. The scene with the nurse saying Brian couldn’t give blood hit hard. Like you said, all this time he hasn’t cared about “rights” and “fitting into the straight world” and “caring about what straight people think”, then he is so suddenly confronted with the reason why all his friends care so much about this. Makes it hit harder that it’s Brian who deals with it first hand. The Melanie and Lindsay scene definitely made me tear up. I always have a hard time watching their arc throughout the show. I really love them, but there are sometimes (especially this season) where I just can’t figure out a way for them to be happy together. But this scene really got me. Showing how all their little arguments and irks about each other mean so little compared to what’s actually important, them and their family together. The “I love you” scene, ughh. Even though it’s ups and downs (and sometimes questionable), Justin and Brian will probably always be one of my favorite couples. You just know how much they love each other. And it may not be the same as Ben and Michael or Lindsay and Melanie or any other couple we’ve seen, but it’s not any less than them at all. It’s a beautiful scene. One thing I also wanted to say I love about this show is how some of the characters, particularly Emmett and Ted, have multiple significant romantic relationships throughout the show. Emmett and Drew are just important as Emmett and George were. Ted and Blake were just as important as Ted and Emmett were at their respective times. Even the Doctor (lol) was very important for Michael’s character before he met Ben. They don’t just have one linear relationship throughout the whole show with every other significant other being “bad” or a obstacle in the way for the “endgame” to get through. It makes it more realistic and gives the character more depth and story.
