Regarding Dembe, the carving that appears on his shoulder is the same one that appears on Anya's shoulder, the girl who was 'saved' by Floriana and gave the speech. It basically tells us that Dembe was one of Floriana's victims and that's one of the possible reasons Red went after her to begin with.
