Saturday Livestream

I'm not sure what's going on here. I don't know if when you hold your mouse over a thumb and it starts showing the video if that counts as plays. That might account for the drop at the beginning of a retention graph also. Regardless, on the content creator side, the ground is even, ie: it's happening to everyone. --- on the user side, it sounds annoying, but it also sounds like something they will fix. I think they are very sensitive to stuff like that and it will hopefully get better. I can hope!

Hi Jon, I enjoyed the analytics side of being on utube. One thing I've noted though is when my feed comes up, there are vidoes that I pass over til get to the content I want, but utube algorythms display that I watched all those videos even tho I scrolled past them..I'm surprised at their algorythm changes and these "watched videos" now clog up my library...something to think about when looking at your analytics..I'm not an experienced at all in this but saw these changes with utubes' last "update".

Great feedback! Does it really matter if they watch all the way through? It matters some - if they get to the end, then they get the Up-next screen which usually features more from the same creator. -- But to your point, even 95% makes the system happy. Monoculture - Yes, if you just do one thing either you or your viewer will burn out on the same thing over and over. Thank you for your helpful comments.

Hi Jon, I watched the replay of the Patreon livestream and wanted to offer a few observations. The main thing I noticed with the video was with the tight editing and the little changes you made. Beyond that, I thought it was a very good production similar in nature to the fish video or the money video. I especially liked the cross panning of the images and the flowing of the text of the recipes instead of just showing it. The role playing of a poor person was a nice addition that was a little different from other videos. On the analytics, I had no idea that YouTube even provided such information! To be honest, does it really matter if a viewer drops off that last few seconds if they have already watched the 95%+ of it to that point? Also, a channel cannot be a monoculture of just one type of viewer and should have different videos for different viewer groups. As long as people are watching the videos, frankly who cares what YouTube does or not does! Okay, that's enough from me!

I think it's great! It allowes us to participate in the process. We become invested. We're cheering for your success.

I don't know maybe all the "wizard behind the curtain" stuff might ruin it for some of you out there. I know I can't watch any movies/tv/youtube without analyzing the snot out of it.

Jon Townsend

Katie Alosi, Thank you for this. It confirms something I was seeing on the retention graph. There are tiny dips in retention whenever the video cuts to those side shots. I think they do take away from the intimacy even if they are beautiful shots. I'll read a novel like that anytime. Thank you!

OK, so I've been cutting up fallen trees and repairing fences out here in California. So, I have watched these videos in completely the wrong order. I am glad I did! I had this video in mind as I watched and thought about how I felt throughout. I did find it pulling me in. I like the use of different types of footage: live action, artwork, pictures of the cookbook, back to you. I think the cuts are perfectly timed. Not too long, not too short. I am still watching, but there was something that DID jump out at me, so I paused to tell you. The cuts that include you looking away from the camera remove me from the interaction. I'm now watching you talk instead of listening to you talk to me. I must say they are beautiful shots, and they solve the issue of coming up with another "something." I can see staying on john and changing the shot helps keep the conversation going. This works great when there are others in the room or if it's an action that we are watching. But while he's talking, it puts distance between the speaker and listener. I've seen others do this by changing the angle but also have the speaker turn to speak to the camera. I'll try to find an example. Sorry for writing you a novel. :)

I thought the new video was fantastic. One technique you might consider, to accommodate some of the comments, is to provide a cue when it might be a good idea to pause the video. I've seen chess channels do that when it is time to guess the next move, and educational channels when they want to put a lot of text on the screen and give viewers the option to stop and read it. Another way users can interact with the content, to create their own experience.

The survey is: Was this a good suggestion for you? The day I take suggestions from an AI is the day I stop watching YT and just stick to Townsends+.

Heather, thank you for your feedback, I hadn't thought about ads at the end. I'll probably always make some content that is longer paces it just might show up in different places. We still have lots of experimenting to do.

Jon Townsend

Please consider there are a number of bots who watch many, many videos for 5 seconds to create data. They count as viewers. But they're really not your audience. Go for making the 75% happy.

Heather Torrey

I did not like the end. YT adds ads at the end of videos so if you don't watch long enough to at least click "skip add", you aren't really "watching to the end." It's not right, but this is the way for now.

Heather Torrey

I do sometimes have to click away because I'm watching/listening at work and something cames up for me... sorry I can't tell YT that's why. I do always come back!! And usually more than once.

Heather Torrey

Post-live comments section: - I did notice it was faster paced. That gave me less time to process the recipes which I didn't love as much as usual. I'll be honest, I enjoy the slower pace (55yo's do watch YT...) - it gives me a calm feeling and I have time to be invested in the content. Also, it's distracting to me when content is too flashy and fast. I have dyslexia and if it's too fast, I can't enjoy. It is awful. Our world is so fast paced, and I want, need, desire longer form content with a slightly slower pace. We don't need more speed and half-done topics. Especially since this is history... it should be a bit more 18th c. in pace. :) You have to do what you gotta do to keep the channel alive and successful. But I will always prefer a calm, walking-pace video. ❤

Heather Torrey

I have lots of comments, even though I missed the live stream. See below.

Thank you Jon for all the information you provide. It is helping me in me in my own creative efforts.

It's interesting - if you go watch a season 1 video, you will find that they do have different cuts than cooking videos of last year. They do have a different cutting style partially because I am able to delivery my content differently so less cutting. Yes, the audience is changing all the time and the style will have to evolve if we want to keep up. If we think it is helpful in delivery the information.

Jon Townsend

Yes, the new approach you are talking about will probably work better for today's audience members, but i doubt it would have been as popular 12 years ago. In the future it will need to change to keep up with audience evolution.

Hal Meng

Jon, it was PERFECT. Perfectly executed and in these days very timely. Standing ovation to you and everyone. BTW, poor mans dinner sounds yummy.

Poor man’s feast was not only informative, but very well done.
