I think I'm Australia there's a kind of dog specifically bred to babysit chickens. They're even using one to protect a kind of endangered bird... Not that that is at all helpful, but it just came to mind.

2022-09-18 17:31:04 +0000 UTCSomehow make the scarecrow swivel in the wind or breeze. I've tried everything I can think of to keep deer off our lawn. So, now I'll set up one of my Halloween skeletons on a metal fence stake and see what that does. One of my mountain lion archery targets worked for a while, but our winds here kept knocking it over. Good luck.

2022-09-14 15:47:30 +0000 UTCOh my gosh Jon! This is the perfect time of year for an 18th century scare crow! I know Sleepy Hollow was early 19th century - But a pumpkin head scarecrow would be perfect. You could make hay stuffed-painted owls too! Also - rush reed whistles so when the wind blows across them they make a whistling sound. You would of course need to silence them when you are shooting an episode, unless its to let people hear what they sound like! The longer the reed/cat tail the lower the note. I think you would need to open and strip them so they are hollow. Imagine the scarecrow rustling like Percy Bythe Shelly's poem - The Hollow men, and the reeds singing. I dare say nary hawk nor crow would approach, and you would have good crops and happy poultry!

2022-09-14 14:10:19 +0000 UTCI love chickens but they are so delicious for predators and I'm a softy that I can't keep them. I like your solution. (The only other thing I can think of is a willow lattice "roof" for their yard, but that would need to be huge.)
