I get that Zeke´s situation is suspicious but he is clearly just jealous. Just accept that she doesn´t want that relationship anymore. There is too much baggage. I think Zeke´s explanation makes sense if you think about what we know. His sister died, he was responsible. His parents may or may not also blamed him. He developed a drinking problem from it (he mentioned being in the AA) and then he vanished for a year. I really don´t think it would be easy to just go to his mom and be like "Hi, I´m here, how are you?" Although breaking into her house to evaluate if she is doing ok also might not be the best approach.
