So Killua isn't "back" as he never left or changed. Illumi basically brainwashed him to not even ATTEMPT to fight someone who was stronger than him or unknown strength. The reason Killua could do the exam with his hands in his pockets and pull out that guys heart without effort is because he could see their power and KNEW they weren't on his level. If he couldn't see their power or could see that they were as strong or stronger than him then he wouldve acted like this and been afraid back then too. Now that that block has been removed, now hes not afraid to at least TRY to fight people he can see are clearly as strong as him instead of running behind his first option. So he didn't get stronger, he just finally got the courage to "pick on someone his own size" instead of only fighting those he already knew had no chance
