[Early Access] The Beatles Anthology: A Bittersweet Miracle

Hey everybody, I'm back with another YouTube video!

Here's the exclusive, ad-free early-access link for Patrons. It'll be up on YouTube publicly in a few days.
Also, I'm aware there's a masking error 53 seconds into this video. Don't worry, it'll be fixed before it goes public. And the thumbnail is set to change.

Hope you dig it, and let me know what your thoughts are on the new Anthology, and where you see the Beatles going after this.

Cheers,

E.

I love seeing the three-tles’ 90’s fits on the doc! Also LOVED THIS VIDEO ELLIOT!

I waited until this was up on youtube to watch it there in some small attempt to nudge its stupid algorithm in your favor, and I’m so grateful for such a thoughtful and loving breakdown of Anthology… and as I’ve seen a few others here say, thank you as a new patron (since Ringo), it is absolutely worth it :)

The last time I saw the Anthology before this was somewhere around 2003/4, when I was in my early teens, on grainy VHS recordings of the original U.S. tv broadcast (with “A-Beatle-C” idents and original commercials intact!). Despite the passage of time, I could tell quite a bit had been edited out—but you know what? I still very much enjoyed this new version of the Anthology, and I’m glad younger fans have an easy way to access it now. Getting to watch it with my dad, who’s responsible for introducing me to the Beatles in the first place, made it so incredibly special. An excellent and thorough analysis as usual, Elliott! And thank you for explaining exactly why the new mix of “Real Love” makes my ears uncomfortable. :p

My first time as a Patron seeing my name in the list. Didn’t think I’d be feeling the high amount of Seratonin that I am! Thank you Elliot, please keep it up!

Another fantastic video. Take 2 of I Saw Her Standing There and Money RM7 were released on the iTunes only Bootleg Recordings 1963 album and This Boy was on the Free as a Bird maxi-single. My favorites are Tell me why, I am the walrus and Baby you're a rich man. It could've been better if there were more unreleased stuff and less SDE material. The new documentary looks great and sounds fantastic overall. I would say that some of the add-in concert crowd noises sounds off pudding because I couldn't hear enough screaming girls half the time. But I felt we get to hear more of John speaking in some parts. I do miss Paul's B7 story, though.

What is there really to say?

No mention of Carnival of Light’s absence?!?

Just excellent – one of your best in my opinion.

Excellent video and incredibly thorough. As one of the Gen Z Beatle fans of which you speak (actually 26), the Anthology series has always sat in a bit of a weird bubble for my burgeoning fandom. It was well in the past by the time I was getting into the group (circa 2014) and not something any of the other fans my age knew much about but it was still readily available in home media stores at the time. It was always this rather daunting touchstone of their legacy that felt very out of reach. As you can imagine, this re-release had me very excited and I went in with really no relationship to the episodes other than years of Beatles fans online telling me that it's the best thing ever made. And, yeah, it's pretty good but my experience probably speaks strongly to an (and probably the only) aspect of this re-release that Elliot didn't quite touch on which is the actual necessity of the Beatles Anthology in 2025. Because, the thing is, I had never seen this series before now but it turns out I, not only knew the Beatles narrative pretty damn well already but, had seen a staggering amount of this footage, unknowingly, after years of trawling the internet for interviews and clips of the Beatles. Herein, at least in my opinion, lies the most pertinent reason to cut so much down from these episodes, especially the live performances. Obviously, the restoration is wonderful and there is so much value in having a one-stop shop that collects all of this material and can serve as a starting point for people (and I hope it does for the fans younger than me! I seem to be in the awkward middle generation of this era). I loved watching this and am glad it exists. I completely understand why fans and audiences were captivated and converted by this series in 1995 and on VHS/DVD. Obviously you guys couldn't see clips of them play live or look up Neil Aspinall's names or read up on the historical details or anecdotes at any time. But, it goes without saying, I had the entire history of the Beatles at my disposal for the entire length of my fandom. Hell, they were on iTunes before I even cared to be listening to them so I never even got the desperation to be tracking down digitised, remastered songs. So, for me, the intended impact of Anthology was never going to be felt and it was always going to be just ever so slightly a let down from the great, epic watch that fandom assured me it was. Dare I say, I found it to be a bit of a frustrating documentary in some respects for all the really interesting lore I was hoping to hear them get into that doesn't even get a look in (everything to do with their romantic lives, for example) . This is very much the "official" narrative of the Beatles and I respect how much episode nine is unashamed about that fact. Perhaps that official history aspect is going to be the most interesting thing to discuss over the next few years. The timing of this drop, intentional or otherwise, left it no option but to be overshadowed by the biopic project. Maybe that was the reason to do it now?
