Bonus Video: Beatles Documentaries - The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Happy new year, everybody!

To close out 2024 I'm going to be talking about some of my favourite (and not so favourite) documentaries on the Beatles, both as a band and as individual members.
Great topic suggested by Andriy, it was fun, if slightly overwhelming to write about a dozen or so documentaries so I hope you all enjoy it.

Also, if you're wondering why the Beatles '64 hasn't been uploaded to YouTube yet, I'm still awaiting on approval from Beatle camp so it'll still just be you folks who can watch that for now.

Hope you all had a great 2024 and wishing you a safe and happy 2025 :)

E.

Looks like you predicted the Anthology restoration that just came out

I remember wanting to watch the Scorsese Harrison doc so badly when it first came out but I didn’t have the streaming service it was on at the time. I basically forgot about it for a number of years because of that, but I now have the service it’s on, and this video reminded me of it for the first time, so I will go check that out asap! Great vid!

I'm watching through McCartney 3, 2, 1 right now based on your review. Wow, it's like falling in love all over again with this music. Such a niche documentary style but with some of the most ubiquitous music in pop culture history, it works so well. My heart is so full.

Watched it again last night. Basically old fashioned story telling on a very linear timeline. It was actually quite well done.

The May Pang Documentary - with Julian Lennon - is an absolute must. We saw it at a rare theatrical screening. I think it may be available to rent on Apple TV+

This makes me realize how a Beach Boys version of Anthology absolutely needs to exist.

Brendan J. Smith

I've still yet to see it!

I surprised The Story of the Lost Weekend by May pang didn’t get a honorable mention for John

I’ve watched The US vs. John Lennon when it first debuted, and several times since. It does go into great detail of how Nixon’s administration were tampering John’s correspondence & phone lines. You also have to watch it with 2004-mindset goggles, at which it does have a liberal slant against the Bush administration at that point. Yet, no real talk in between about Allen White… oh well. Still, it felt as if Lennon didn’t have Sean, it would still have that “revolutionary” mentality & aura around him. But, being a father changes a man, and you change your priorities in life. It’s definitely a doc worth looking into in the future. ✌🏻

Lennon NYC is pretty interesting, there’s some great interviews with people we haven’t heard from much like members of Elephants Memory and Yoko is pretty candid in her interviews as well. P.S. very interested to see if you’ll do a review on your main channel of the new Dylan biopic (I’m too scared to watch until you review it)

Been a busy welcoming into the New Year so only got around to this now. Wonderfully informative as always, a joy to watch. In regards to the title I suppose I did give too much a Click-Bait one haha. I think I was most interested to see what you had to say about Eight Days. I agree in regards to the colourisation and zooming into 4:3. Thanks a mill for doing this. Also, this is to anyone out there, I've heard there's a work print of Anthology from 1995 (Not LWR), which has more drug discussions and such. if anyone could point me in that direction, much appreciated.

When Anthology first aired, I was 11 years old, nearly 12, and I recall not having much interest at first. But my parents watched every installment as each first aired. One evening, during the second part, I overheard the sounds of the show from the other room and I surreptitiously peeked my head 'round the corner to investigate. At that moment they began showing the promo clip for Strawberry Fields Forever. And I had never seen or heard anything like it. It was right up my alley. It was mind-blowing. From that moment on, I was interested. That's where my love for the band began. Also, fantastic video, as always. Still waiting in the wings for Wings, of course.

Great video; Here's the url for a copy of the Long and Winding Road film you were trying to find: https://archive.org/details/the-long-and-winding-road-neil-aspinal-workprint

While it would be fascinating to see a doc on the '74 Dark Horse tour, that is unlikely. Apparently George specifically called out that footage as something he'd prefer not see the light of day post-mortem. Perhaps Jackson's involvement with the Bangladesh project may provide an opportunity to see what's behind that closed door in the future. It's been long rumored that George, and subsequently his estate, were behind the delayed release of 'Let it Be' Thankfully, that delay provided technology to develop so the movie streaming now is in the best quality its ever been.

Really hoping you'll touch on Remi Wolf in that 2024 pop music video

Excellent, as always. However, “The Compleat Beatles” while stogy and aging, was the second generation of Beatles fan’s introduction to the band. My parents were fans, but it aired on public TV in the early 80s. I also appreciate that it uses the music, but because it’s not sanctioned, the commentary was unflinching. I appreciate that. For that reason, it’ll always be a sentimental favorite. (I watch it an embarrassing number of times a year.)
