Bonus Video: Blur, Oasis, and Britpop

Hello hello!

I present to you the Bonus Video for September 2024 where I explore the history of Britpop and how two bands called Blur and Oasis battled for the title.
I also share my own thoughts about the band and reveal whom I think is the better overall act.
I was having too much fun editing this (we keep getting closer to these being full-blown YouTube videos 🙃)

So please enjoy because I think this is one of the best I've published on Patreon!

Bonus Video: Blur, Oasis, and Britpop

Comments

Great video, Elliot! If you haven't already seen it, I highly recommend the 2003 film documentary 'Live Forever - The Rise and Fall of Brit Pop', a really insightful and entertaining look back at that period. Captures the mood perfectly with some brilliant interviews with the Gallagher brothers, Damon, Jarvis and other protagonists from that era.

I was born the year of the big britpop battle and wasn’t really too aware of either band growing up, but as an adult I’ve started to get into both Oasis and Blur more and more, and I like both for different reasons. Oasis is so anthemic in their songwriting, and Blur really embraces a quirky and ever changing ethos to their’s. Overall though Don’t Look Back in Anger is probably my favorite britpop song. I was a big grunge fan as a teen but as I get older I vibe much more with Britpop in general. Cool video!

Tyler Piper

Great video, Elliot! Hope you were able to get tickets for Oasis in Australia!

pally

Blur or Oasis?… Pulp.

Luke Hall

Your screen name is so funny!

I’m a new subscriber here but been obsessed with your YouTube channel since it started! Great video! I’m from Manchester and the Oasis reunion currently has the city in a chokehold! Would be so interesting to hear more of your take on BritPop and possibly a bit of a look into Manchesters Music Heritage, Factory and ‘Madchester’ as they call it. We also have some insane new bands emerging from here too! (Watch 24 Hour Party People- it gives Rutles but Manc) I’m going to see Oasis first Manchester date at Heaton Park in about 2 weeks now. Also watching ELO and Sabbath in the same week so it’s going to be one hell of a gig week.

Blur is just better to me. 13 and self titled are amazing. Graham Coxon's guitar is beautiful, Damon is always great Blur is also top 3 favorite bands ever for me (Also I am American, just thought I should add that) Oasis to me, is just...alright. Those first 2 albums are great, but nothing beats 13 and S/T

Harrison

If I had the wherewithal to make this into a longer YT video you know I would

Elliot Roberts

How could you you talk about early 90s Brit music without mentioning Shoegaze

Edmund Au-Yeung

What a lovely video, thanks. Britpop was my identity for a while during the original years and watching Liam videos during the last months kept me sane and kinda okay during this fucked up times. So yeah, I will see them in August. Because I am old and would regret not doing it. Anyways, I agree with you on nearly everything and will graciously look over the Stand by me failure, cheers.

It’s just a rain jacket from the brand RAINS

Elliot Roberts

Where did you get the parka? I've been looking for something similar for a few years, but have never found the right terminology, other than "Gallagher jacket"...

Michael Pemulis

Thanks Andre! Will do!

Elliot Roberts

Great video Elliot, thanks for that! 😊 I've always been a huge Oasis fan, so I'm very excited to finally see them in Manchester in July! I never really cared much for Blur though. So it was nice to learn a bit more about them and what you like about them from your video! And by the way, if you enjoyed the Liam compilations, there's this video on YouTube of Noel commenting on their music videos, it's called "Noel Gallagher's Oasis DVD commentary highlights". You should really check it out if you haven't seen it already, it's one of the funniest videos on the entire internet!

Andre Laemmerzahl

Just saw this comment. I've actually seen the movie! Way back in August. It came to Australia first (which doesn't happen much), but I think they tested it on our audiences here.

Elliot Roberts

Hey Elliot! Quick question. Have you watched the Midas Man trailer yet?

Nathaniel Kring

They ran it early in Australia. I think it comes out on Prime everywhere on October 29th

Elliot Roberts

Fair enough hahaha

Marshal Does Stuff

Great video Elliot! And Love all the news for future videos. Super excited for more content. Biggest takeaway.. you’ve seen Midas Man? Didn’t even know there was a release date

Shea Donlin

Excellent!

Þorgeir Tryggvason

Yes but they struggled to break through moreso before 1997. And especially compared to Oasis.

Elliot Roberts

It's an exaggeration to say that Blur didn't break through in the US before 1997. "There's No Other Way" and "Girls & Boys" both charted here.

Sam Aronow

I just got your patreon and I’m loving it so far keep doing what you’re doing!

Fred Schmid

Oh Lordy, another error haha. Thank you, yes. I think I had the Standing on the Shoulders of Giants artwork on my iPod for that song and the association has always stuck.

Elliot Roberts

Just DM me on here (Patreon) whenever you feel an idea pop into your head! But I (usually) like to get submissions half way through the month for the poll. This month I’ll need them earlier but I’ll message the people within this tier when it’s time.

Elliot Roberts

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Stand By Me was on Be Here Now?

Marshal Does Stuff

Great vid as always; I just upgraded my tier to “submit a topic for vote.” How do we submit the topic?

Queen Emily

Great video! That was really interesting point you made about how Blur were more like The Beatles than Oasis with respect to how they experimented with different sounds. I always preferred Blur. Really enjoyed the Clairo video too! I recently got into her music. I noticed you mentioned Elliott Smith a few times in that video - have a listen to his album Figure 8 if you haven’t already. Very Beatles inspired in a lot of places!👌

Matt Tregortha

I had a britpop phase a couple years ago so I’m happy to dive back into this world! Hoping to snag some Oasis tickets for 2025 🤞Great video!

Anna

Thanks for putting out some of my favorite content on YouTube. Cannot wait for the Ringo video. You've always been quality over quantity, so I know it will be fantastic.

Jesse Hart

I was just teasing, a bit. I love both channels. Both of your channels are among my favorites.

Eric Cheung

Ringo video about to be a 10/10 I can already tell. Also thank you for the Clairo video, listened to that album right after watching and it’s definitely a AOTY contender for me

Kendy Parchman

layla

Thank you for suggesting it Jesse you absolutely nailed this one!

Elliot Roberts

I modelled my Patreon on Jenny's. These monthly bonus videos were directly influenced by her monthly ramble videos. And when you make the kind of videos that Jenny does, a year is always worth the wait (I'm just not up to that + I like posting more regularly on YT)

Elliot Roberts

Just saw the run time before opening the video. So stoked to hear about your detailed thoughts on this topic

Jesse Hart

Ooh, shots fired at Jenny Nicholson, though I think she tends to fill those gaps with Patreon-only ramble videos.

Eric Cheung

Whoops thanks for the correction, hope you enjoyed the video!

Demon Days was released in 2005, not 2003
