Bonus Video: Elliot predicts future Beatles releases

A Super Deluxe of Magical Mystery Tour would be the perfect and likely only good place to put Carnival of Light

Wesley Heinecke

Imagine this: you're listening to a song and it's like Paul McCartney is serenading you in your living room. That's the power of cleaning up those classic tracks. It's not about erasing history; it's about letting the music shine in all its glory. Now, don't get me wrong, I love the original recordings with their unique sound. But I always imagine introducing the Beatles to someone who's never heard them before. I’d want them to experience the full genius, not be distracted by the audio equivalent of static cling. It's like giving a legendary painting a gentle dusting so everyone can appreciate its brilliance. So, why not let technology work its magic and bring those timeless tunes into the present with a clarity that would make even Lennon nod in approval? So why not let listeners have both options? It's like having your cake and eating it too, because who in their right mind wouldn't want more cake?

Regarding the perfect machine remastering, I'd like to have all of the mono catalog available on streaming services so we can enjoy both versions. I love hearing the songs sound brand new, as if they were released yesterday, but I'd also appreciate having the original versions available.

Great predictions !! The Shea Stadium film should be ready to go, as it was restored into 4K in 2016, the whole concert (minus Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby) was shown in cinemas after the premiere of Eight Days A Week. I watched it, and loved it so much, so it's a shame that it's not already out. I think we could expect a documentary or at least a short film to accompany it. With the Hollywood Bowl, the 2016 remix was able to reduce the crowd noise by a significant amount but not so much that it exposed the Beatles so much. Plus, it followed the classic 1977 track listing, so we only got a mix of the two concerts, I think it'd be better to remix both the 1964 and 1965 shows in full, and release a double CD package. With the final point you make about things being too perfect, I take what you say and mostly agree with it, however I would say that the only thing being changed about them is the mix. The songs are still as full as they always have been and are only being altered to enhance the way we hear it, they are not being changed. I don't know if you're aware, but Queen have just announced a new deluxe box set and remix of their debut album, and have released a single to preview the set, and the changes are drastic... They have used PITCH-CORRECTION on Freddie Mercury's vocal. (THAT'S RIGHT... PITCH-CORRECTION. On. FREDDIE. MERCURY'S. voice!!) Like WHAT THE HELL ?? Not only that, they have replaced Roger Taylor's original drum track for samples so have a completely different sound. So, here they are actually trying to change the song and removes its essence, but with the Beatles and their re-releases, they are only enhancing the sound, rather than trying to improve/fix it.

I watch DVD’s all the time. I own over 100 tv shows

Im always excited to see or hear new things when it comes to the bugs themselves or their music. With the example of the hidden guitar in magical mystery tour; it’s just cool to know that it’s there. We have that knowledge now and any new Beatles stuff is more than welcome - you have that choice to listen to it or listen to the old versions. The older versions aren’t going anywhere - It’s just super cool that to this day we’re uncovering new stuff and receiving updated versions of films or music. KEEP EM COMING!!!!!!

Peter

Thank you

Sure Frank! Sorry about that: https://discord.gg/vknYhSPg

Hey I've been a patron for a few months now and I can't get in to the discord. Could you give me a fresh link?

Frank Stalaggh

I think the 1966 Budokan concert would also be a super cool official release! Very similar to Shea Stadium, but with considerably less screaming, which I imagine would make Peter Jackson's life much easier. I believe an Apple-approved recording of the concert was released exclusively in Japan (on LaserDisc...lol), but it would be so nice to see it get re-released in a more accessible way.

Dana

Honestly i don’t know where Apple will go after Rubber Soul whenever that is released but I would definitely like to see a box set packaged with Magical Mystery Tour and Yellow submarine in their remixed form with their respective outtakes

Sam

Thank you Jorge!

Elliot Roberts

The way I see it Elliot, as long as the original albums are still up on streaming services and available physically and the remixes are nothing other than a different version to listen to the albums, I think that’s totally fine and I say keep ‘em coming. I personally prefer listening to the remixes because I really dislike the fake stereo mixes. I just want the music in a higher quality for my everyday listening. I much prefer that over being someone obsessed with having to listen to ONLY the original versions. Let it just be up to whoever listens. The originals will always be there, and many people prefer them. But for those that want something different (like me), I’m super happy with the remixes and it’s the way I choose to listen to The Beatles, even if that’s not the way they intended for me to listen to them.

Very interesting! In a funny way, it reminds me of when Star Wars first came out and everyone (including 12-year-old me) was laughing at the trailer, so they yanked it from the theaters. You had to be there to know it.

Jorge Bernardo

Congrats on your new Beatles fandom. Red and Blue rerelease seems a great place to start, sampling their entire catalog as the best of the best. Just wanted to share that I got to meet Giles in 1999, along with his dad and mom, when Sir George was touring talking about the making of Sgt. Peppers. I had organized a local Beatles fan club in the DC area and we got Sir George a gift and he asked to meet me after the show. Thrill of a lifetime. All of them were absolutely lovely. ☺️

Jorge Bernardo

Yes, to the Anthology stuff!

Jorge Bernardo

Once again, Elliot, you ask all the right questions which spark our imaginations with excitement. I hope you’re planning on writing a/some book(s) because that’s your greatest strength me thinks: Writing. Regarding shining old objects with too much polish, I can’t help but think that freshening up old recordings to sound more modern will not only appeal to younger audiences, but will also increase our enjoyment of those same recordings. Having said that, I just purchased a turntable that plays to Bluetooth so I can enjoy my old Sinatra albums closer to as they were heard in the 50’s/60’s. Hmm… Alas, keep the great content coming. You’re the only YouTuber I currently support financially because I really appreciate what you do, combining great writing with entertaining presentation.

Part of the outtakes was also used in Paul's Liverpool Sound Collage, specifically when George is like "Bum bum bum"

Andrew Kuder

Sorry, dude. I’m sad the show ended, too. 😢

Kathryn Coffey

Don’t hold your breath!

Elliot Roberts

That’s so cool but now I’m even sadder that I never saw the LOVE show 🥲

Elliot Roberts

One thing I noticed, I heard part of the "Think for Yourself" outtake in the Beatles Love show in Las Vegas. There was a part of the show where the Beatles appear as silhouettes, and they have to dodge various silhouette obstacles thrown at them by the Nowhere Men (the show's main 4 protagonists Eggman, The Fool, Dr. Robert, and Pink) (and don't ask why that is, it's never explained). I heard John say the "sometimes I feel less than useless" line in that segment. So, there might be hope for the future Rubber Soul release. As for the other ideas mentioned, I'd be all for it, especially the remastered/remixed Anthology series. There's so much potential, and I'm very much all for it!

Kathryn Coffey

For my bets, the Anthology on Blu-ray and the Rubber Soul Super Deluxe box set should be out. I would love to see some bonus interviews which didn't make the cut (which we did get a little taste on Martin Scorcese's George doc). As for my pipe dream, I would love to have the Beatles cartoons on Blu-ray (there's some great 16mm film footage on archive.org BTW), an all analogue mastered stereo vinyl box set and perhaps a reissue of the mono box set but in colored vinyl (much like the Stones' recent box set). I still regret selling my mono box set some years ago (although I still have the CDs though). But last and not least, I would love to see you do a video about the Beatles cartoons. I know you're working on the Ringo video which I'm really looking forward to. ✌️💙😊

Todd Costa Rica

Great video! Love all of your ideas. As someone who basically just REALLY got into the Beatles with the remixed Red & Blue albums (wild, I know), I genuinely believe that full Giles Martin mixes of their discography will 100% increase the interest of the streaming generations in their older work even more (although I completely agree that the mono mixes need to be more easily accessible for posterity). I was absolutely BLOWN AWAY by the new mixes of the PPM and AHDN albums’ songs especially. Having proper centered stereo mixes of the entire Beatles’ catalogue is, I think, a worthy enough task without it delving into issues of being “too polished” - although if they keep trying to remix them further, that feeling might change. My initial predictions were that we would see Rubber Soul SE at the end of this year and a remastered Beatles Anthology release next year for its 30th anniversary, but it sounds like Rubber Soul SE might be more likely next year due to the anniversary thing. I was also thinking that a future collection of film releases (on streaming, 4K/blu ray box set, and even packaging together SEs of AHDN, Help, MMT, YS, and LIB) might be possible as a way to get around having to put out individual special editions for some of these albums, but I think your idea is more likely. One thing I didn’t hear you suggest but which has been at the forefront of my mind is new MAL-assisted Giles Martin remixes of Free as a Bird and Real Love on future Anthology releases. Given the amount of YT videos out there attempting something to that effect already, there is definitely interest in it. Obviously, cleaning up Lennon’s vocals to Now and Then level is something Jeff Lynne et al could never do and so I wouldn’t be surprised if it would mess a lot with the intended balance of both tracks, but I think the experiment is worth doing. The main reason why this idea is so prevalent in my mind is that the 2015 mix of Real Love that Giles did for 1+ absolutely turned my mind around on the song from my least favorite of the three posthumous tracks to my absolute favorite, and that’s still with a very compressed Lennon vocal.

Maxwell Dziabis

I would love to hear a cleaned up “Star Club” release. I think that we overlook the delicious punk incarnation of The Beatles. The joy and energy is palpable and gives a big glimpse into their charisma. I also believe that no one is more interested in securing the rights and financial potential of The Beatles more than Paul McCartney. I could see all of these things if for no other reason that it renews the copyright of the material. Clearly, preventing this material from entering the public domain is a heavy motivator. It’s unrealistic to think that Paul won’t attempt to lock down as much intellectual material as possible.

Amy Lineaweaver

I think we will eventually see Carnival of Light out there, but probably not until Paul and Ringo have passed.

Christina Lohr

I don't know how likely this is, but I would really like an official release of Carnival of Light

Andrew Kuder

Interesting note about the Shea Stadium concert footage; when the Eight Days a Week documentary came out in 2016, it got a limited theatrical release for a couple of weeks and attached to the end of that documentary they included a fully remastered cut of the Shea Stadium footage with the sound having been fully remastered by Giles Martin. I actually saw it in theatres and it looked and sounded amazing, and Apple Corps have just been sitting on that remastered footage now for nearly a decade. I’d have thought they’d have included it as a bonus disc once Eight Days a Week got a physical release but nope…it was in theatres for a few weeks and then it vanished. My assumption is that Apple hasn’t put it out yet because there’s some legal dispute about who owns the rights to the film.

Cracking video Elliot... I like the new releases with all there re-twigging. We have the original releases to listen to but my go to are the recent 'new' additions. I would be be stoked if Rubber Soul was released this year. Has there ever been a better first 4 songs on a Beatles album? (I think most Beatle fans don't care about anniversaries) The Anthology series wasn't on my radar but are hearing your thoughts, that would be a aewsome box set. A remastered Free as a Bird and Real Love is one thing I would kill for. I was in my early 20's when Anthology series came out and the excitement levels were through the roof. I was never more excited to be a Beatles fan. If we get a release this year I would think an announcement would be fairly soon Cheers Heath
