[Early Access!] My thoughts on The Beatles 'Let It Be' (2024 restoration)

Comments

Hi Elliot..I'll watch anything wit h The Beatles in it so I loved Let it Be..the unedited music clips were the highlight. If you don't compare it to Get Back if was thoroughly enjoyable.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts re: MLH's belief that they were 'this close' to playing the big finale overseas. I literally did a double-take when I first saw that and questioned if I had missed something in Get Back the day prior to George's exit. They would have been more likely to play at the Cavern or in Hamburg or the BBC studios given the spirit of the project. I wonder if they ever considered those locations.

I don't think it's only that Peter Jackson's restoration technology has improved since "Get Back", I also think he simply applied less of this technology to "Let It Be". Apparently, Michael Lindsay-Hogg requested the restoration of "Let It Be" to have a more filmic look/quality to it than "Get Back" (thank god!)

I thought the editing was sorta messy but, I did enjoy the fun moments we didnt get in get back which the meldoy I think has only been on anthology 3 so thats pretty nice to see on a screen

Reed

Love it! And maybe you can try to put Paul's Good Morning alarm on your ringtone 🤗

“Get Back” has more of a cohessive story than “Let it Be,” but that’s not to say “Get Back” tells the WHOLE story. If it’s a Peter Jackson project, I pretty much expect that Get Back is going to get an extended cut at some point. Maybe combine the two films and have it presented with the 2024 “Let it Be” restoration style? Now, that might make the 2024 release of “Let it Be” somewhat redundant, but If nothing else, it might inspire quite the drinking game (lots of potential here with the inconsistent wardrobe changes, cutting to different locations randomly, and even how many times the film director and/or Billy Preston appears in a camera shot).

I saw the film about 20 years ago, because a friend lent me the VHS, along with a certain bootlegged Rolling Stones documentary. The moments you mentioned were definitely memorable to me. Until a few years ago, I had no hope of getting another chance at looking at Let it Be, except through a bootleg I bought, which has the problem of editing in a lot of leading audio that tried to craft an anti-Yoko narrative, so I'm looking forward to picking up this legitimate version on 4K disc, ASAP.

It reinforces how remarkable “Get Back” is and Peter Jackson’s skill as a storyteller. My issue with “Let it Be” is that there is no clear narrative. The perspective isn’t compelling. I’ve seldom (read: hardly ever) said this about The Beatles, but “Let it Be” was boring.
