Bonus Video: Reacting to Rolling Stone's 100 Best Solo Beatles Songs
Added 2024-03-31 13:28:48 +0000 UTC
Hey gang!
Here is March's Bonus Video where I react to Rolling Stone's list (compiled by Rob Sheffield) of the 100 best solo Beatle songs.
In what has become easily my longest Bonus Video at over an hour, I had a ball going through this fantastic list and didn't skip a single entry.

I find the trendy aversion to cloud 9 and the over inflation of some of the MOR slop from GH’s 70’s output mystifying. Devils radio in particular is a scandalous omission given some of the truly average stuff included, it’s a list made by someone whose basically showing off, look at all the b sides and deep cuts I know.

I think this is a really cool varied list! The one song I'd add would be Behind that Locked Door from George. Also I'm biased but I would've loved to see more Beacoups of Blues tunes, as that is probably my favorite solo beatles album. Great video!

On the topic of scrapped Harrisongs: Sat Singing is, to me, George’s best song of the 80’s, it beats most of George’s output that decade by a mile! Wish they would put it on streaming though…

I looked up the article seconds after watching because I felt so flabbergasted at myself for somehow missing the ranking and comments on Silly Love Songs... I think some people really had enough. 💔

also fun fact about You're Sixteen was written by the brother duo who wrote Its a Small World and several Disney movie soundtracks like Mary Poppins. The surviving brother just died on Saturday.

Love seeing Queenie Eye relatively high up! New was the first McCartney album I remember being able to anticipate coming out. As a relatively young fan, the singles, especially Queenie Eye, hold a lot of nostalgia for me. When I saw Paul in 2022 he played it at my show and I absolutely lost my mind, I thought he'd never play those songs again after Egypt Station and McCartney III came out.

Why am I crying? Did this encapsulate so much of what I adore about The Beatles? Did Rob Sheffield’s words hit on the extraordinary gift The Beatles are to all of us?

It wasn’t a bad list & I loved your reaction. Maybe I’m Amazed is my favorite song ever. However, I’d have specified the Wings Over America live version, as I feel it is superior to the McCartney version (not that I don’t love that album).

For the Dolby Atmos mixes: if you’re listening to them on Apple Music, just turn off Spatial Audio. You’ll be able to enjoy the original mixes of those George Harrison albums.

Thanks for doing this and your other solo rankings. One of the tragedies of the breakup is that so many great songs aren't as well known as they should be. Every song on every Beatles album is known by tens (hundreds?) of millions of people but few have heard all of the solo work. Ironically one of the reasons for the breakup is that they felt like it was a fight for space on the albums, but by breaking up they made some of their good solo music relatively obscure.
I'm looking forward to your Ringo list: when people ask me what are my greatest influences as a performer I always say 1) The Beatles and 2) the early 70s work of Mr. Ringo Starr. His RINGO album sounds the most like an actual Beatles album and is all fun. I got into music seriously in my 40s and I found that when I played at open mikes with my Ringo-like music people were so relieved to hear music that was just trying to have a good time. I don't like really any of his music after the early 70s (and feel that more of those early songs should have been included in this list) and I'm hoping your new list will spark some interest in later music.
Thanks again!

Rob Sheffield lost the plot when he called Now and Then a "masterpiece" and it being "the final statement Beatles fan deserve". Pretty sure Abbey Road is a masterpiece and the final statement we already had and deserved. I'm scared of looking at this list.
