[Early Access!] 'The Beach Boys Love You' | Brian Wilson's 1977 Synth-Pop Oddity

Hello everybody!

I am so pleased to preview my latest video on the 1977 album 'The Beach Boys Love You.'
I have been meaning to make another video on the Beach Boys since my 'Love and Mercy' video in 2021. I hope you've been excited for a return of them too.

I have spent a lot of time editing and mixing the sound for this video so I would recommend watching with HEADPHONES for the best experience.

I usually leave 2-3 days for early access but due to a sponsor deadline, I will be releasing this in about a day and a half's time BUT as a bonus perk of being Patrons at this tier, I will be doing my first ever DISCORD Q&A Tuesday 11:30am AEST (That'll be Monday evening for most of you... maybe check-in with a time-zone calculator so you don't miss it.
We can talk about this video or whatever you want, but it'll only be for an hour or so, so don't miss it!

Talk soon and enjoy the video (I'm particularly proud of this one).

E.

This is one of my favourite videos of yours, and given how much of an insight you give into Brian’s state of mind, it was the first one I thought to rewatch as I heard of his death💔💔

Thanks so much, Justin. Reading words like this really makes my day. I appreciate it.

Found you with The Beatles being my favorite band. You helped introduce me to the genius of The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds that I had always found hard to appreciate. Your Love & Mercy video helped me onboard with some of the most important music I have ever come to know through Pet Sounds, Sunflower, Surf's Up, Today!, etc. Bitter at first to admit it, something has occurred that I never thought would happen and The Beach Boys have supplanted The Beatles as my favorite band. Not in a way that degrades how important The Beatles have been to me, but exposing a space above that I never knew existed. I can never thank you enough. Your patron forever - Justin

In all seriousness this was a wonderful video. I’ve been a huge Brian fan for many years and was lucky to see him debut SMiLE in Liverpool in 2004. His story is full of joy, heartbreak and ultimately redemption with beautiful music along the way. It’s so nice to share thoughts with folks who ‘get’ Brian and his music. If you’re looking for deep dives into the Beach Boys, Brian and their albums I’d strongly recommend the ‘Sail On’ podcast. Brilliantly constructed, researched and made with real love for the man and his music. Brilliant video, thank you again.

Marvellous!! Love Brian, now we need a ‘Smart Girls’ video.

Hey Scorpio! Thanks for such a considered response to the video. Yes, the early-mid 70s albums display a creatively fascinating period for the Beach Boys and those box sets have been a real delight the last few years (I actually used the 'Good Time' sessions from the 'Feel Flows' one in this video.)

Bravo! 'Love You' is a strange delight indeed. The creepier moments I usually don't overthink too much about, but the interviews don't really help his case either.... Anyway, you really did your homework on this project! I learned so much that I never knew. I never liked "Ding Dang" and unfortunately the super intertesting background on the song still can't save it for me. It always struck me more as a throwaway track. The compliation 'Classics: Selected by Brian Wilson' is really what made me a huge fan of the band back in 2003. Likewise, 'Love You' was their first studio album that I actually gravitated towards to understanding their leagacy better. It's far from a perfect album. Brian's vocals are not that great, but are indeed sincere. The help with the other Beach Boys without a doubt made it a smoother listen. I always wondered if the label sabotaged the success of this album too. "Johnny Carson" and "Let Us Go on This Way" both would have been better choices as singles. 'Pet Sounds' will always be their masterpiece. 'Smile' will always be the "What-if." 'Love You' will always be the cult classic. However, for me, 'Sunflower,' 'Surf's Up,' 'So Tough,' and 'Holland' will always be my favorites because they sound more like the creative efforts of a talented band than that of just a genius. I would love for you to tackle the recent box sets that cover those 4 albums. Lastly, I would suggest that 'Light Album' was probably the rare gem in the later years. Give it another listen... LOL Once again, we appreciate all your hardwork and personality in your wonderful videos.

Elliot I don't how you do it but you keep outdoing yourself. This honestly might be your best video yet

This review was very heartwarming and hysterical at the same time. Great job as always, Elliot! The end credits were really neat, too.

always happy to see more beach boys content from you elliot! i hope someday you make a video exploring the shelved follow up “adult/child”, it’s an even more outlandish batch of songs from brian that are too often overlooked.
