I was speaking to my grandad today and he was telling me he saw the Beatles live 3 times twice in concert halls and once at the Cavern both somewhere around 1963 and 1964 he couldn't hear them well any of the times because of the screaming at the concert halls and because apparently, the original cavern club was incredibly echoey so you couldn't hear the music very well there either. He said that his friend recorded the entire cavern gig on a portable tape recorder and took a bunch of pictures but they all got lost in a move a few years ago.

I agree with you about the futility of seeing them live during the height of Beatlemania. My Go to era would be the Casbah, the Kaiser Kellar, and when they take over Liverpool in 61-62. I've always understood the "Missing Link" gig that started Beatlemania in Liverpool was at Litherland town hall in December of 1960, with the Searchers. Back from Hamburg with the New haircuts and leather jackets. Everyone thought they were German.

Love that album!

Great topic and great video! A few months ago, you were talking about your new curiosity of 70s Beach Boys music. Hopefully, you got a chance to listen to their "In Concert" album from 1973. A truly electrifying preformance! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKfRoUq_DSk&list=PLjZnpDlBzipJ3GY5flwP0SFcT35rZnsPL

The best way so far to experience the early Beatles is to find a copy of the EXECUTIVE EDITION bootleg of the Star Clubs tapes. The audio quality is the best so far (though many of us pray that the Get Back technology will be used to make it better someday) PLUS there is a wonderful video that comes with it that has the whole recording with pictures of them onstage at the time PLUS a transcription of what they are singing and saying. It's amazing. Also, you didn't mention the LIVE AT THE BBC recordings which are them doing the early stuff live in the studio (no audience). Mainly great sound quality and a great vibe.

I 100% agree with you on the 2 microphones! And your impressions were spot on ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

Very cool video, something interesting to your point about seeing the Beatles live pre-Epstein cleaning them up is that I think that's where the value lies in something like those Star-Club bootleg tapes that get tossed around a lot. Admittedly the audio quality of those tapes are abysmal, but there is something uniquely fascinating about them since they capture the band at a very specific point where they're playing a Hamburg club with the same kind of sloppy irreverance they had before Brian "made them presentable", but also now they have Ringo in the band providing his excellent drumming and they're starting to throw a couple of originals into the set like "I Saw Her Standing There" and "Ask Me Why" as they prep for the Please Please Me album that they'll record only two months later. It's the nearest you get to hearing the Beatles as a kind of proto-punk band, even if you gotta parse through a wall of noise to hear it.

Your comments about what made them such a great live band are so true! I often love going back to rewatch all their live videos because you can really entertain yourself watching all their little quirks and unique playing styles; which you recreated ever so elegantly lol. Again I also might be totally biased but you really don't get the same fluidity closeness and general fun in a lot of live bands as you did with them. The two microphone thing as you pointed out is just one of those things. Again totally agree with seeing them live right after hamburg too, I just know the energy in the room would be electric. Another banger video, you never miss fr.

This is so cool, my grandma has a gym friend that has actually seen them at the Cavern Club before they went big. I was shocked but happy haha

Great subject! The Cavern Club clip, Shea Stadium, and The Ed Sullivan clips are my favorite live performances by them. Itโ€™s a shame they werenโ€™t more โ€œonโ€ in Japan, but as you noted their schedule was outrageous!
