Bonus Video: The Beatles & A.I.

Couldn't agree with you more about the uncanny valley effect. Like what Elliot was saying, I get so confused when I read comments on these videos being like "Wow, that sounds just like Adele singing a Michael Jackson song! It's literally moved me to tears!" No, nobody in their right mind would hear that and think it sounds like Adele! And there's no way Paul and Ringo would allow a new "Beatles" song to be released sounding THAT shitty.

Yeah, the rage-baiting that happened the second that interview went out has really pissed me off. Nothing but bad faith reads. Also re: actual generative A.I. stuff - outside the Weekend At Bernie's factor, I think my line is that it's cool when it's a meme. For that, we all know it's fake & shitty & we're just having a goof with it. But if someone uses it sincerely, to try to create an actually moving piece of art, that's when I get skeeved out in that Uncanney Valley way.

You see all of these artists like Stevie Nicks and Bob Dylan selling their entire catelogue for hundreds of millions of dollars that I wonder if the next big thing in the music industry is to let AI use their likeness to create/write brand new music with their younger sounding voices. The retired stars just live on forever with new hit songs.

I’m very much looking forward to this “new” song. Yeah, Free as a Bird got mixed reviews at the time, but most fans enjoy it now. I’d love to hear it cleaned up. That was actually my first thought after hearing what McCartney said. But the outrage is just a very small & benign example of how people look at information these days. They never read beyond the headline (which is designed to draw you in & make you feel a certain way) & don’t do any of their own research. I feel like I’ve known Paul my whole life. He’d never disrespect his bandmates or fans by doing a fully AI track. Both John & George would hate it.

The dramatic music coming in when you showed the reaction to Paul breaking the news was so perfect. I was shocked at the level of fuss everyone made, as someone who adores Paul it was mad to me the bad faith people seemed to have reacting to a fairly benign statement. Perhaps that’s just because I made the connection between the anthology project, Get Back and then this and didn’t think twice about it. Perhaps it’s just because AI is a hot topic and it was a good story for a snappy headline. Anyway I’m excited and just looking forward to the song but without any big expectations. I’m happy whatever it may be and will take it with good faith that Paul has done the best job and that he and Ringo have made something they think John and George would be happy with.

I'm cautiously excited, anything Beatle related to come out I'm excited for. But MAN there were so many people who only read the headlines and didn't actually read what Paul said, that was really frustrating to me.

I was somewhat bewildered about a Beatles AI song at first (I heard of the AI Beatle songs—-John sings a Paul song sort of thing—through the grapevine/Caitlin Larkin) but I felt more at ease about it after talking about it with my family. When it comes to AI, my brother put it best: “AI is best used in moderation.” I do agree with you on the stance where there’s no raw emotion in AI, only synthetic ones, and it does rub me the wrong way knowing there’s a video of AI George singing an Oasis song.

Very good, Elliot. Thank you.

Also I would love some cleaned up Anthology stuff. Might be a good avenue for Giles M now the albums are drying up. (Can you add much to a Please Please Me box set?) Hey that’s a point - what do you think will come next from Giles, beyond the 62-65 albums?

I was looking forward to your take on this - and similarly bewildered by some of the assumptions out there! I’m excited for (very probably) Now And Then. I loved both the other Anthology newbies. (I think I prefer Real Love. Sorry, boys!)
