Bonus Video: My Favourite Movie Soundtracks!

Hi everyone,

I had a blast editing this month's Bonus Video, it's definitely one of my favourites!
I feature samples of every movie soundtrack I mention and I really think you'll enjoy it.

I'll definitely re-use some of the topic suggestions that didn't win for next month as well, because they were excellent.

Appreciate you catching that!

Great fantastic video, but there's just a minor error I noticed as a huge Wall-E fan: Thomas Newman did the score for Wall-E, not Giacchino. Still both excellent composers however!

I love Dark! And you’re right, like everything else with that show, the music was superb.

Elliot Roberts

Elliot, have you seen Dark? That's a TV show with a fantastic score/soundtrack.

Score: Lord of Rings is really great. But I want to mention one of my favorites, the Star Trek 2: Wrath of Khan by James Horner. It was his first major soundtrack and he KILLED it. I prefer it to his bigger later ones like Braveheart and Titanic because its operating somewhere closer to John Williams but he has his own flair. Soundtracks: Grosse Point Blank (great flick if you haven't seen it, John Cusack as a hired killer) has an excellent selection of 80s New Wave and such, all tying in with him going back for a high school reunion, and much of it is diegetic in the movie. And responding to your mention of Scott Pilgrim, Edgar Wright has really followed in Tarantino's footsteps with great use of pop music in his films. I think Baby Driver is an excellent soundtrack. But also The World's End rules if you like early 90s Brit Pop, which I do! Also I have to make a shout out to the first album I ever bought as a kid... The movie soundtrack to The Little Shop of Horrors. Full of bangers.

so ecstatic to hear a shoutout for the Lost soundtrack, absolutely the greatest TV score of all time even all these years later. i personally really love john powell’s score for the first HTTYD, ‘test drive’ and ‘coming back around’ especially. swiss army man has a great acapella score with lots of singing by paul dano and daniel radcliffe which adds so much to the tone and atmosphere of the film. fantastic mr. fox has a lovely quirky little score by alexander desplat that always puts a smile on my face. if i had to pick a soundtrack that’s a compilation i would probably say the august rush soundtrack, which is good because a movie about music should have a good selection of songs to back it up. i could go on for hours but im just glad you made a video on this topic cause not many people do.

It would be amazing to see a full video on Harry Nilsson!

Ace Ramsey

I think 'This Is Spinal Tap' is perhaps the most legendary song based soundtrack ever! I also love 'Fright Night (1985),' 'Pee Wee's Big Adventure,' 'Clash of the Titans (1981),' 'Dawn of the Dead (1978),' and 'The Thing (1981)' Elliot, there are too many good ones to pick. I think horror films and fantasy films usually have the best scores from my experinece.

Scorpio 2

As a kid, I LOVED the Over The Hedge soundtrack, and honestly I still love it today. They got Ben Folds to do a lot of the songs, and he did not have to go as hard as he did. I'm so nostalgic for songs like 'Heist', 'Family of Me', and 'Still (Reprise)'.

Hands down, Boogie Nights is my favorite soundtrack of all time.

I’m glad to see Alan Silvestri getting some love right off the bat! Sometimes in high school I used to listen to the Back to the Future score while doing homework - made it way more exciting and mysterious 😂 I’m a sucker for 80s movie soundtracks. Since it was common for filmmakers to commission new songs for their movies, I find that soundtracks from that time feel a lot stronger and more cohesive. My favorite soundtrack has to be Beverly Hills Cop - “The Heat Is On,” “Stir It Up,” and “Neutron Dance,” all on one album? Amazing.

I bought the Goldmember soundtrack on CD!

Elliot Roberts

Kind of a stretch here but personally I really love all three Austin Powers soundtracks 😅 the first holds a special place in my heart because my uncle had the CD and I have a certain memory of him singing The Female of the Species and the second one is even better with REM’s cover of Draggin’ The Line and the Elvis Costello cover of I’ll Never Fall in Love Again.

JackJack_1479

love that you mentioned the phantom thread!! literally watched it fr the first time this ! morning ! & all i could think about was how beautiful the score was 😭

layla

Lovely video. I appreciate this is not a film, but I find the score for Amazon's Tales From the Loop to be beautiful. It's piano led, and balances both excitement and melancholy perfectly, very much reflecting the characters and setting.

Dan Hinchliffe

My 3 favourites: The Phantom of Paradise, 24 Hour Party People and Hedwig and the Angry Inch (both versions).

Estrella

Random other faves include The Blues Brothers (I prefer their Jailhouse Rock to Elvis), X-Men: First Class (I prefer it to the movie and wish they’d kept Henry Jackman around - but Michael Kamen’s original X-Men score is underrated), Trainspotting (another pop music banger) and Fantastic Mr Fox (which made me notice the Beach Boys at last). Anyway, great vid, hooray soundtracks. :)

Grafty

I would’ve but a comedy special isn’t a movie so I didn’t include it!

Elliot Roberts

Loved this! I collect movie soundtracks (for some reason Little Miss Sunshine decided that for me - just, hey, this is a whole world, explore this!) and there was a lot of crossover here. Will need to investigate The Social Network.

Grafty

I don't see inside over there🤨
