Bonus Video: Beatles Pilgrimage — My trip to Liverpool

Hey everyone!

I just wanted to say thank you to my new top-tier Patrons that have joined since the John Lennon and Q&A videos were released. I really appreciate you contributing and keeping these videos going!

Speaking of which, here is the bonus video for May! I'm currently in Europe at the moment (I'll be back home in just over a week) but I wanted to share with you my somewhat freewheeling video on my trip to Liverpool.
If you watch my videos because of the Beatles content I think you'll really enjoy this!

Thank you for sharing this; I hope it's not a stretch to imagine it must be the fantasy of any Beatlemaniac to someday have the privilege to visit the place where it all started, and for those like myself who may not have the means to make such a trip in the near-future, it's an understatement to express how much of a delight it is to peek into Liverpool and the snapshots this city and the fans have made in honour of the four lads who continue to touch countless lives even 60 years later! (Oh my goodness, my apologies for the word-vomit—but this is exciting alone to watch, you must've been bubbling with it!) As I'm watching, the one thing my mind kept returning to again and again... Not a single one of them could've predicted the ways their familial little home, the normalcy of the day-in and -out, would change so drastically to feature and celebrate them at every corner! From statues to plaques of lyrics, and everything in-between, I just keep daydreaming back to their humble beginnings and not yet have a clue the impact they'd have on millions of lives for decades to come nor the everlasting love to be received. This is just so incredible, and Liverpool showcases so much more than I could've dreamed.

Thanks for another great video. It makes me want to go there soon. You probably already know this, but the Matthews Street Beatles museum is run by Roag Best, Pete's half brother by Neil Aspinall. He's also working on turning the home where the original Casbah Club still exists into a B&B. This is probably why Pete and Stuart figure so prominently in the signage. I am in the minority I'm sure, but I think that both are a prominent part of the legacy and deserve to be called Beatles. I do, however, find it a little self-egrandizing to relegate George and Ringo to the interior panels. You almost don't notice them if you're looking at the front door head-on. I'd like to think Pete made his peace with it all after getting a pretty hefty royalty check for his contribution to the Anthology series.

Yeah, I never got the chance to but that's something you should totally do!

Hi Elliot! Only just subscribed to your patreon so only just watched this video. Hoping to make this trip in summer this year. You possibly already know but you can now stay in George Harrison's childhood home in Speke. It's being let out as an airb&b.

I was just in London over Christmas & went to Abbey Road. Liverpool is still on the list, especially since my family is from there. Glad you had a great time!

Erin Wiggins

I really hope I can make that journey soon

Love this!! Thank you so much for sharing! I visited England once when I lived in Europe but was 8 years old and barely knew who the Beatles were so unfortunately didn’t make it to Liverpool. I live in the US now but damn you’ve inspired me to stop putting off planning, too much cool stuff to see!

Sarah

Part of what makes them so special! Thanks Emily :)

I really enjoyed this video, Elliot! A fun watch and it was great to live vicariously a little. I am hopeful my son will want to join me on a Beatles pilgrimage someday (he's only 2, but based on his love for the song "Yellow Submarine" he's destined to be a fan, right???? :) ). It always strikes me how humble (for lack of a better term) John, Paul, George and Ringo's beginnings were. There was no nepotism and they were not born in rich families, yet they became incredibly famous and, more importantly, so beloved by so many. Enjoy the rest of your vacation!

I’m glad you had a great time! I enjoyed seeing your Instagram posts so this was a fun surprise. I was lucky enough to see a Beatle exhibit a few years back & I was truly overwhelmed. And then I got to see more at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame last year & couldn’t process what I was looking at. So I can’t even imagine how I would feel being in Liverpool & seeing all this cool stuff in person. Anyway, really loved this video!! I can’t wait for more from you soon.

I’m so jealous, I just wrapped up a study abroad program in England yesterday and I was unfortunately not able to visit Liverpool in my time there. I got to Abbey Road though! Happy for you!

Loved watching this, thanks Elliot. My partner and I visited Liverpool in Dec 2018, and though we went for the Beatles side of it, we absolutely fell in love with the city. We stayed in an AirBnB that was an old Church converted into apartments- it was magical. It's a brilliant place old Liddypool. We also had virtually the same experience at the Cavern. It was packed full of rowdy drunks, so we took some photos and got out of there haha Also tried getting a pint at the Phil, one of Johns favourite pubs. It was beyond packed, so we checked out the famous Victorian bathrooms and moved on. Unfortunately when we visited Strawberry Field the new interiors were still under construction, so directly behind the gate were walls of construction sheets, which was a shame. And the National Trust tours also don't run during winter, so sadly we couldn't go inside the childhood homes of any Beatles. Oh well, next time. But the highlight for us was certainly Woolton. We still talk about how amazing it was to wander around and soak in the vibe. And similarly, we tried and failed to get inside the church hall where J&P met. So glad you got to spend time there, it truly is a must visit for any Beatle fan! Enjoy the rest of your trip!

love your commentary! what a lovely city too, this video has definitely convinced me to visit the next time i cross the ocean.

Cassandra

What a great vid. Liverpool is one of those places I hope to see someday, and those sneaky shots were great. One thing to note is apparently George Harrison's childhood home turned into an Airbnb. Maybe you should consider staying the next time you stop by around there

I didn't quite have the energy to make the trek to his school but that's awesome! Amazing story about the toast btw haha.

Elliot Roberts

Lovely video, Elliot. Did you check out Paul's old school, now the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts? A lovely area on the edge of the town centre, if nothing else. Unrelatedly I once caused a total evacuation of the Beatles Museum after I burnt some toast in an adjoining retail unit. Good times.

Dan Hinchliffe

also, the cavern club stage was so small! i never thought of it like that!!

Izzy Tepe

this is driving me insane with excitement. like, i want to go there so bad omg but this video is the next best thing for sure.

Izzy Tepe

I know you avoided bus/shuttle tours because you wanted to self-drive as much as possible (understandable right now), but it was a real trip going on a recreation of the Magical Mystery Tour bus to all those spots.

Bennett Billard

Those statues weren't there when I went back in 2000 (unveiled Dec. 2015), but they're a neat touch. I was 11 at the time, so unfortunately I was too young to go into the actual Cavern, but I did appreciate the museum replica. Shame to hear about the lady "joke"-coughing on you. Good on you for continuing masking, especially travelling.

Another great video! When I went to Liverpool I made the mistake of renting a hotel room downtown...all those hen parties and stag do's absolutely devolve as the night wears on, making sleep entirely impossible. Wish I'd spent some more time in the suburbs--it looked lovely.

Fathom (Nancy Howie)

Glad you enjoyed and best wishes for the rest of your Europe trip! Another great video and as someone who is from the UK (but London) it has inspired me to want to make a pilgrimage up to Liverpool!
