STAR TREK (2009) - Full Length Reaction!

Here's the full length reaction to Star Trek! Interstellar was basically tied for first place in our latest poll, so I'll react to it later this month as well :) Enjoy!

STAR TREK (2009) - Full Length Reaction!

Comments

Food for thought! This was 2 years ago. I utterly agree with Mr. Writhms! I've been watching Star Trek since about 1968! ToS, Animated, TNG, DS-9, Voy, ToS Movies, TNG Movies are all great for me! I couldn't get attached to "Enterprise", nor "Discovery." As for these Kelvin Timeline movies I liked them! I haven't seen: Short Treks, Picard, Lower Decks or Prodigy yet! As Mr. Writhms notes: "Strange New Worlds" "...is very old school Star Trek..." For me it is how "Star Trek" should be! "...explore strange new worlds... To seek out new civilizations. To boldly go where no one has gone before." With the new age format of 10 episodes per season, it feels too short! But I will say that these first 2 seasons are incredible! It definitely does explore strange new worlds and has adventures that are great too. Thee only character I can't quite get attached to is Nyota Uhura. They labeled her a Prodogy... I don't remember that from any show or movie, but it just 'doesn't feel right.' With Anson Mount as Christopher Pike they hit the ball out of the park here! He is like any Star Trek Captain should be! For me he is Thee Best Captain of them all - only rivaling Captain's Janeway and Sisko! (Please note I only say this because I haven't seen Picard yet!) It's not just him but it's the entirety of everything that makes the show thee best of all time. So would we like to see Addie get TwitterPated with Captain Christopher Pike?!? lol I would!

Randolph Tirazona

Someone commented about how they hate these new movies because it made everyone a man-child. The real man-children seem to be all the trekkies here just based off the vitriol they have for a movie and lack of respect when talking to someone with a differing opinion lol

Daniel Vu

There's been a lot of commentary here talking about how bad the reboot sequel screwed things up, but if I may make an observation... There are MANY high quality stories in the history of Star Trek... ...which are now ON Addie's Radar.

Richard Ryan

Abrams has now had a hand in mucking up 3 beloved franchises: Star Trek, Star Wars, and Tolkien's Middle-Earth (apparently he recommended the Rings of Power showrunners to Amazon). 🤔

Byrd N. Hand

Hey Aaron, millions of Star Trek fans feel as you do.This franchise has lost its way under the new show runners

Hok'Tar

Sooooooo, yeah, I'm a Star Trek snob. I'll watch this one with you, but the rest in the reboot series is too far a departure from what made the original great. Therefore I can go no further. Sorry.

Aaron Chandler

I feel like if you like Sci-fi, you will like Dark Matter PS: My favorite "star" series is still Stargate :D

FatLittleButterfly

I would 100% agree that if you do watch the originals, skip the first movie. Also/or watching the essential next generation episodes as there are so many and then watching the follow on movies for that series could be an idea.

Rob Collins

Trekkies have entered the chat. Buckle up. For the true Kirk/Spock arc, which is the reason we are here, I recommend checking out as much of the Original series as you can take. They are dated but worth it. Even if you only watch one Episode, ’Space Seed’ will give you a taste of the original aesthetic and some background on Star Trek 2, (skip the first movie, check it out later). Then 3, 4, 5, 6, After that there are some many directions you can go. Movies 7 and on are based off TNG, witch while very good, is a lot. But again worth it. Captain Picard, IMO, is the best thing Star Trek has ever came up with. Great stuff LLAP

RP

You should of watched the older movies first

Damien Brown

Although... There's a new Star Trek series on Paramount Plus called "STRANGE NEW WORLDS" that I find excellent for new-comers as well as old fans. It takes place on the Enterprise early before the original series-- before Kirk and Spock meet. And it is very old school Star Trek, meaning: each episode is a self contained story with a beginning and end, not connecting to any other show or movie.

Prof. Writhms

watching star trek with a noob, how fun

zynjams

So glad you liked this, Addie. I’ve been a fan of the franchise since the 80s and while this trilogy is a departure from the original canon, and many found it off putting to use the alternate timeline conceit to allow for the changes in this origin story (and the events in the next film as well), I think it captures the spirit and the the fun. I look forward to you completing this trilogy and then making up your own mind about continuing with the franchise … there’s a lot and everyone will likely tell you different approaches so just do what you feel is best.

I'm curious - did you notice that Uhura is played by the same actress who plays Gamora in the MCU? That the actor who plays McCoy plays Skurge from the 3rd Thor movie? Or that the captain that goes turns over command to Jim Kirk's father at the very beginning was the leader of the Ten Rings from the first Iron Man movie?

The Dingo

You're right, for a complete Star Trek newbie this was probably a good one to start with. The first six Trek movies build on the original TV show, though you'd probably catch on pretty quick if you wanted to watch them. They're a mixed bag, however. Some are amazing, some are just bad. Movies 7 through 10 bring in the characters from Star Trek: The Next Generation. Again, knowledge of the show helps, but you can probably enjoy them without having seen the show first. Unless you really become a big fan of this world, you can probably just stick with this one and its two direct sequels(though they keep trying to make a fourth one, we'll see if it ever happens)

Patrick Egan

I'd do at least a Top 10 (or even a top 5) of the original series first: 10. The Corbomite Maneuver 9. The Naked Time 8. Mirror, Mirror 7. The Doomsday Machine 6. Space Seed 5. The Menagerie (Parts 1 & 2) 4. Amok Time 3. Balance of Terror 2. The Trouble With Tribbles 1. The City on the Edge of Forever

Sean Novack

Addie, is The Mandalorian on your watch list? Season 3 starts the first of March. There are only 16 episodes if you don't include the 3 Boba Fett ones. They average around 35 minutes each. We hope you have a wonderful holiday.  Thank you!

Gideon James

Let's see if we can do this again with Addie's next poll.

Alex Tan

BTW, when you watch Interstellar (2014), please have the tissues ready because, like I've said before, there will be parts of the movie that'll make you cry.

Alex Tan

Hope you do the next movie in this series. Thank you so much!!

Ed Garland

Mission complete…we got em both lol

David Martin

I'm soooo happy you did this movie!! Made my day!

Jayson Phillips

The Star Trek movies are for the new generation that didn't grow up with it.

DazzMetalStorm

Happy Monday, Addie! I hope that you had a great weekend. 😊 This is such a great movie with a great cast. I keep forgetting that Zoe Saldana, Chris Hemsworth, and Jennifer Morrison are in this movie. Love Chis Pine is great as James T. Kirk. This movie was directed by JJ Abrams, who would go on to direct "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" and "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker". If you decide to continue with the "Star Trek" movies, I highly recommend starting from the beginning with "Star Trek: The Motion Picture". I've only seen a couple of the "Star Trek" movie, and enjoyed the ones that I saw. Have a great day today! 😊

Randee Carreno

I honestly cannot state how much this made a truly terrible day better - my comfort reactor with my comfort startrek, right when I really needed it. Assembling snacks and a blanket, thanks Addie!

Abbie Sharp

Yeah, I disagree. I think it's a horrible representation of Star Trek. Star Trek is supposed to be a drama, with action in it. This is an action movie, with no heart, that doesn't make sense.

The Real NC Picker

I'm SHOCKED this won. As a long time Star Trek fan I don't recognize this as a Star Trek movie. I won't be watching this reaction, I'm sorry, but I'm here for other reactions.

The Real NC Picker

I’m glad you are watching Star Trek because it’s good science-fiction. However, if you’ve never seen any of the original films, or the original series, you are doing yourself a disservice by not starting with them. I would highly recommend after this film starting with Star Trek: the motion picture. And then proceed from there

MotoDork

As a long time fan of Star Trek, I really appreciated the excitement and fun that Abrams brought to the series. I know a lot of “classic” trekkies aren’t as happy with the series of movies, but I think they’re a great representation of the Star Trek franchise. If you enjoyed this, then I do hope you watch the other two in the series. But I might also suggest you watch the classic six Star Trek movies as well. They’re … very different. But some of my favorite movies from when I was a kid!

The Inedible Mattman!

Happy Monday, Addie. J.J. Abram's Star Trek (2009) looks like an epic film. Looking forward to watching it for the first time, since I've only seen Into Darkness (2013). Live long and prosper, Addie. 🖖
