STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII - THE LAST JEDI - Full Length Reaction!

That's fine, but other people like to get their bad feelings about a movie or series off their chest, especially when it involves a beloved property like Star Wars or LotR, which they see as being destroyed by the shitty films/series currently being put out. So in a sense this is the only way they can manage to "chill".

Richard Maurer

Granted, Lucas was trying to push the boundaries of technology in the PT just as he had done in the OT (and contrary to popular belief, the PT wasn't all just made in front of a green screen )... and this work paved the way for a fair amount of SFX today.

Byrd N. Hand

Pretty much. I just wouldn't watch it lol. Why would I waste my time writing paragraphs about a movie I dislike? You can't change the outcome

Aaron Wolfe

So when you watch a movie you think is bad you "just chill" ?

Richard Maurer

I'm assuming you mean AOTC instead of "The Clone Wars"? As I've previously mentioned, I'll pretty much die on the hill that any flaws with the prequels were strictly execution-related. A more deft screenwriter and a more actor-friendly co-director would've put the PT nearly on par with the OT (alas, all those Lucas asked to help him in making this trilogy basically told him he should just make the movies himself instead of continuing to act as 'Grand Overseer' of the saga as he did on TESB and ROTJ). Even so, I still don't think it's that hard to read between the lines as to what Lucas was going for in these movies in spite of that. The story, lore, mythology, world-building, costume/art/alien/creature/etc. designs were otherwise all spot-on... but all those things have been shit under the Di$ney regime, IMO; I listed most of my grievances with their half-assed work in my post in the TFA comment section. I'll also defend Lucas' ultimate decision to use the Ewoks in ROTJ instead of Wookiees, since, after all, the Wookiees have been shown to be too technologically advanced to drive home the story point of the all-powerful Empire being taken down by primitive weaponry (the Rebels having a Wookiee among them would've also given them an obvious advantage for winning them over). I only wish the Ewoks' designs weren't made to look so teddy bear-ish. 🤔 The first act of ROTJ (aka Operation: Rescue Han) is actually my biggest problem with the first 6 movies; it's really more of a side story, since it has nothing to do with the OT's primary 'Galactic Civil War' arc and only briefly touches on its secondary arc of Luke learning the ways of the Force in order to restore the Jedi Order. It's just about tying up a loose end left by TESB... and, as a result, the story doesn't really get going again until nearly halfway through the movie. For me, the 'core saga' *WAS* Star Wars -- the Skywalker family, the Force, the Jedi/Sith, and the galactic government (the franchise is nearly indistinguishable from Dune without those elements at that point). I was never going to give a shit about these side story movies/TV shows (though I'm fine if other people do). Unfortunately, given that they totally botched the ST and left no viable path forward for Episode X and beyond in that regard, I have no reason to care at this point. The only thing that's going to get me back at this point is if they completely redo VII-IX, this time actually closely following the story Lucas gave them to use in the first place *and* keep him aboard in an advisory role in terms of the finer details of story/lore/mythology/design/world-building/etc. I don't care if they have to recast the OT characters in order to make it happen; let that be a scarlet letter on the current Lucasfilm regime for not doing it right from the start.

Who cares it's just a movie people need to chill

I'm curious: In my opinion, the Star Wars films appear in the following order, from best to worst. I'm well aware that opinions vary, but I'd like to see what you all think. These are all excellent and really close 1. The Empire Strikes Back 2. Rogue One 3. Star Wars __________________ These are good movies, maybe not "great" but still a lot of fun 4. The Revenge of the Sith (If they had JUST included more of the initial draft that showed in the novel!) 5. The Force Awakens (A really nice reboot with plenty of callbacks and new hooks to explore) 6. The Return of the Jedi (I get that Lucas makes his money on merchandise and needed to save the Galaxy with teddy bears, but those should have been Wookies!) __________________ These were flawed, but not terrible 7. Solo 8. The Phantom Menace 9. The Rise of Skywalker __________________ What in the hell were the writers even thinking? 10. The Clone Wars 11. The Last Jedi

Granted, SW is technically *fantasy,* not sci-fi (even if it incorporates prominent sci-fi elements like space travel and futuristic technology), but, no, there's not a lot of attention to maintaining continuity with how things worked in the first 6 movies. I mean, going into hyperspace *is* now basically like dusting crops and apparently the Force can now have new power levels unlocked. 🙄

I'm sure many of us could've accepted Luke's status in this trilogy if there had been more - and better - context given for it. Instead, as with Han and Leia both reverting to how they were at the beginning of the OT in the last movie, we're apparently just supposed to accept it at face value, because that's the plot. Never mind it makes no sense from where they were when we last left them at the end of ROTJ. Even Mark Hamill himself strongly disagreed with the direction Luke was taken. It was such a hare-brained concept to have several crucial plot points in this trilogy hinge on things that happened off-screen between Eps. VI & VII. While they half-heartedly try to fill in some of the gaps with flashbacks, they ended up making more of a mess, given that the first 6 movies never had any flashbacks, and so now there's an internal storytelling inconsistency within the saga. I still can't help but think Johnson already had the basic story for this movie kicking around inside his head even before he got the gig and then basically just injected the TFA characters into it.

Byrd N. Hand

My main issue with this and the previous film is the science in their science fiction. The absurdity of what we see defies willing suspension of disbelief. Case-in-point: the First Order armada flies light years in pursuit of the rebels but can't move a single ship except for fighters once they encounter them.

Jim Schmitz

So people should only comment when they love a film? Talk about a boring comment section.

Richard Maurer

I find it hilarious that people HAVE to feel like they need to share why they absolutely hate these films as if they are being forced to watch them XD Great reaction Addie! I really enjoy these films despite the flaws. They are fun to watch

LightsCameraJake

Did you notice that the kid at the end used the force to pick up the broom?

While Last Jedi is definitely flawed I only have issues with pacing and the secondary storyline. I love all the Luke Skywalker stuff. Star Wars worshippers couldn't get past him being characterised this way but after Force Awakens this really was the way to go. Why else would he have become a space hermit? If Luke was perfect there would be no arc. And by the way, he never was perfect! This film is full of meaning and beautiful imagery. Blame Force Awakens for being unambitious or blame Rise of Skywalker for being pandering but Last Jedi actually has strong subversive ideas. Johnson tries to elevate and expand on what's come before instead of burying it in lore and fan service

George Baxter

I can’t access it. I’ve tried ten of the Captchas to proceed and none are registering.

Well... There is one thing about the sequel trilogy we can all agree upon. It is great they went old school, back to using practical effects. They shot model ships and real sets with limited use of CGI, instead of everything being CGI like the prequel trilogy. This includes Yoda being a puppet this time, like the original trilogy.

Holdo was already a character in the liea novels and in comics, I don't think they introduced her to be different. Also with Luke I understand people's disappointment but as a person with PTSD this felt very in line with someone who has been through trauma like he has. I found it heartbreaking and a smart decision. Anakin was his father, ofcourse he was the only only one who could redeem vader. That doesn't mean he can't fail. I do agree with the Fin complaints, but after I got over my issues with the movie I found a lot of beauty in it. I think you should forgive Rian Johnson just to let go of the animosity for your own sake, it's what Luke would want anyway.

The lack of a single showrunner was very evident here. I enjoyed the first film in the sequel trilogy, and this one did everything it could to turn the messages of the first on their head. It turned Finn into a clown when it wasn't completely ignoring him. It introduced the most leadership-challenged military "Admiral" in the history of cinema. For no reason other than the director's "Hey! Let's be different!" attitude it destroyed the entire redemption arc of Anakin Skywalker and his son's part in it by turning Luke into someone who would murder because of what someone MIGHT do. This is the man who redeemed Darth freakin Vader! Too much of this film make so little sense when placed in-universe. I can't forgive Rian Johnson for doing that.

Sean Novack

You don't give either of the series' 2 catchphrases to a non-common tongue-speaking character. You don't make a 'core saga' Star Wars movie without a lightsaber duel, either (though, given the staging of the other ones in this trilogy, maybe it's for the best there wasn't one here). 🤦‍♂

Happy Monday, Addie! 😊 This is a great way to start off the week. RIP always to our Princess, Carrie Fisher! This is a good follow-up to the previous one. It's always bittersweet whenever I watch this one, especially Luke and Leia's reunion, because it's Carrie Fisher's last "Star Wars" movie she made. She passed away in 2016 while on a book tour promoting her last autobiography, and right before the promotion for this movie was to start. Really liked the introduction of the character of Rose. Thr Porgs are cute. The scenes with Luke and Rey are great. I've always felt like Holdo could've found a way to tell Poe what the plan was. But overall, I like the character. Fun Fact: Director Rian Johnson confirmed in an interview once that BB8's beeps in the start of the movie translates to the line that's in every Star Wars movie "I have a bad feeling about this". And that's why Poe said "happy beeps here buddy". I rarely cry during most movies(except for Titanic), but Luke's death gets to me every time. Like Rey said, it was with peace and purpose. Have a great day today! 😊

Happy Monday, Addie. Star Wars: The Last Jedi is a great continuation to The Force Awakens, IMO. I just don't see what the issues are with this movie and the next one, The Rise of Skywalker. I think the debut of Kelly Marie Tran as Rose Tico was great and the Porgs were cute. Oh and a I have to warn you that the next movie will have a scene with a giant snake in it. You got this, Addie. Please be brave. May the force be with you, always.
