STAR WARS: EPISODE VII - THE FORCE AWAKENS - Full Length Reaction!

Here's the full length reaction to Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens! I'm officially starting the Sequel Trilogy! I've definitely heard a lot of mixed things about the sequels going into this, but I wanted to watch them and see for myself! Aaaand I actually really liked this one! Enjoy!

This lightsaber is the one Luke lost in Empire Strikes Back when his hand was cut off. He built a new green one in Return of The Jedi.

Nathan Cline

Glad you enjoyed that, but if you want happy memories of Star Wars, you should honestly stop here. Disney literally went 'well its Star Wars so WHO CARES, it'll succeed no matter what' Then we cut the the 'its sunny in Philadelphia' opening "How Disney guaranteed Star Wars would fail"

Jarrod Clemens

So glad you liked it! I know Ep 8 The Last Jedi is very divisive, but it’s one of my favs, right after Empire Strikes Back. I hope you get a chance to go in without a pre-disposition toward either liking or disliking it!

Well, you just demonstrated in your last paragraph that this trilogy was conceptually shit from the start. They set all that crap up but then never actually address it. The deeper you get into a franchise, the harder it is to just pull the story out of your ass as you go without making an effort to uphold the integrity of the previous outings. The PT at least could've been easily fixed with a more deft screenwriter and a more actor-friendly co-director at Lucas' side (which he tried to get, but all those he asked told him he should just make the movies himself). There was no fixing this incoherent clusterfuck of a trilogy. It all comes down to what you find more objectionable: a shack built on solid ground or a fancy house built on quicksand. Me, I'll take the former every time, since you can at least tear down the shack and easily rebuild something better in its place, whereas no matter how many times you try to rebuild on the latter, it's always eventually going to sink. And I'd love to know what you perceived to be major plot holes and character inconsistencies in the OT outside of the context of the retcon of Luke and Leia actually being twin siblings, which I still don't think is that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things. Again, it's easier to get away with such alterations early on than it is later. I'll concur, though, that the OT is definitely not perfect, mostly because of the first half of ROTJ. The whole first act is effectively a side story that has nothing to do with the trilogy's primary 'Galactic Civil War' arc, and only briefly touches on its secondary arc of Luke learning the ways of the Force in order to restore the Jedi Order; it's simply all about tying up a loose end left at the end of TESB (it also gets the movie off to a rather slow start). And, as previously mentioned, the presentation of the revelation that Luke and Leia are siblings feels like an afterthought there; it's more effective if first learned at the end of ROTS, IMO.

This trilogy is not perfect, but neither was the OT in spite of people’s worshipful praise, and the PT was a fucking disaster. All the complaints about plot holes and character inconsistency here can be equally applied to the OT. It’s a space opera, folks. It’s not great filmmaking, it’s epic filmmaking, and those are not the same thing. For me, The Last Jedi is the best movie in this trilogy and the second or third best in the entire Skywalker Saga. The character dynamics are complex, motivations are layered (y’all know whose motivations I’m specifically referring to here, I’m sure), and Hondo is an incredible character. In fact, just about all my beefs with the sequel trilogy are with this movie and the contemptuous catastrophe that is the final film, which makes about as much sense as a Star Wars tabletop RPG campaign designed by a 14-year old. The seeds of the problem are here though. How is the Resistance different from the Republic’s military arm? What exactly are they resisting? Isn’t the First Order technically a resistance movement, since they’re the ones in rebellion? What’s the deal with Snoke? Why is there ALWAYS a desert planet and a Death Star, for God’s sake?

Brian Harris

I agree with everything you said. Regarding Han's death, can we talk about how, when Rey and Chewie returned to the rebel base, Chewie and Leia walked right past eachother and did not even look at eachother. Han was Chewie's best and closest friend for DECADES, and he was also the father of Leia's son, and they just walk past eachother like nothing happened and Leia walks up to Rey, who only met Han a few days prior, and hugs HER?? Make it make sense.

MotoDork

Emphasis on casual, as in not really paying much attention or really even thinking about what's happening on the screen.

Richard Maurer

Di$ney Star Wars can best be summed up in 2 quotes from this trilogy: "Let the past die; kill it, if you have to" and "That's not how the Force works."

Byrd N. Hand

I'm glad you liked this one, Addie. I'll be curious to see what you think about the trilogy as a whole once you've seen all three. I enjoyed Force Awakens when I first saw it, even though it was a blatant rehash of A New Hope. But looking back, count me among those who think this trilogy was a mess from the very beginning. I won't rant about them any further. because debating Star Wars on the Internet is a minefield I've no interest in walking through these days.

Patrick Egan

YAY thanks Addie!! I'm a huge fan of the movies. It's always the "die hard" star wars fans that seem to have problems. Any casual watcher (that i know of) seems to really enjoy these movies. Cant wait to watch with you :)

Anthony Jackson

Granted, the execution is kind of irrelevant if the conceptualization is crap from the start, wouldn't you say? There's no fixing a house built on quicksand. Give the PT a more deft screenwriter and a more actor-friendly (co-?)director, on the other hand, and it would be nearly on par with the OT (I already prefer ROTS over ROTJ).

Byrd N. Hand

Honestly the difference in the failures and successes of the Prequel and Sequel Trilogies just come down to ideas vs execution. the Prequels had great ideas and terrible execution. The sequels had mediocre ideas and great execution. For Example: watching how the Sith infiltrated the senate in the Prequels? Great idea. Terrible character dynamics and pacing ruined that. Whereas in the Sequels: A 'New Order' identical to the old one builds a bigger Death Star... Terrible Idea. But great character dynamics and pacing. Now imagine a Trilogy where they had great ideas and execution: Oh wait, the Original Trilogy... Maybe that's enough?

George Baxter

Almost as bad as Rings of Power. Okay, I take that back, even the Sequels aren't that horrible.

Richard Maurer

I'm super excited to watch these again!

I’m glad you liked "Episode 7". This was the consensus of most fans when it released. It was "Episode 8" that drove the fandom toward the dark side of civil war. I’m very interested to hear your honest opinion after "Episode 8". Some have said the sequel trilogy killed Star Wars, and that “The Mandalorian” brought it back to life. I’m not here to say what I think either way. I’m just very interested to see the reactions. I mean… Why else are we here? ✌🙂

All they had to do was follow the story George Lucas gave them to use in the first place... and allow him to stay on in an advisory role to help with the finer elements of story, lore, mythology, design, world-building, etc. But apparently the new regime thought they understood this IP better than its own creator. Nothing arrogant or hubristic about that. No, sir. 🙄

Byrd N. Hand

To be fair, I only hated The Last Jedi. lol It wasn’t good, but that’s just my opinion. Episodes VII, and IX are good, and worth rewatching. I just don’t like the direction they took the trilogy in. Especially after having read so many of the books growing up.

*I promise this is the only post I'll make for the whole trilogy. I know most people think things started going off the rails in the next movie, but, really, many of the problems in the subsequent movies (and TV series) were set up right here from the start, IMO, so I don't know why this one still tends to get a free pass 🤷‍♂ (and it goes beyond the fact that the plot is mostly just a rehash of ANH's and all the shallow, pandering nostalgia-baiting). You've got the utter lack of exposition between Eps. VI & VII, numerous crucial plot points having happened off-screen between VI & VII (thus having to introduce flashbacks, even though none of the first 6 movies had any -- thus creating an internal storytelling inconsistency within the saga), the virtually non-existent world-building, returning OT characters all doing things that run contrary to their established character arcs and where we last left them, the often more modern/MCU-esque dialogue (as opposed to the stylized '30s/'40s movie speak of Eps. I-VI) and humor, taking the laws of both the Force and hyperspace into highly questionable directions, the general feeling of there not being any real stakes, the lack of any new and distinct/unique sounds, incredibly clunky combat and (especially) lightsaber duel choreography, no new spacecraft/weaponry/militia/etc. (all just slightly modified stuff from the OT), totally non-descript planets (again, more repeated OT stuff), boring costume and art designs, uninspired alien and creature designs that mostly don't really look all that Star Wars-y, alien characters being almost completely relegated to the background, bland/vaguely-written new characters, the reappearance/overinflated importance of items from the OT that we really never should've seen again (Anakin's/Luke's old lightsaber, Vader's remains, etc.), painfully self-aware/virtually fourth wall-breaking winks to Eps. I-VI (IV-VI especially), the list goes on... I won't even touch Han's totally undignified, largely shrugged-off death.

Byrd N. Hand

Here comes all the people who feel like they HAVE to share that they hated these movies. xD (Grabs popcorn)

Happy Friday, Addie! 😊 You made it to the sequel trilogy. RIP always to Carrie Fisher!!! I saw this one opening night. The scenes when Rey and Finn flew the Falcon out of Jakku and the battle on Takodana from the moment Poe flew in with the Resistance looked great on the big screen. And honestly, I didn't even see Han's death coming that first time that I saw it. Now, it's the only scene of the movie that I don't watch. And I'm really glad that Harrison Ford came back for this one given that Carrie Fisher passed away after the next one. BB-8 is still one of my favorite droids up there with R2-D2. In my opinion, the sequel trilogy are really good movies. Each of them does have several moments that I like. However, the original trilogy is still my favorite. Have a great rest of the day & weekend! Hope that you're enjoying your vacation. :)

I was excited for the sequel trilogy, but I don’t want anything to do with them anymore. Rogue One is great, and Solo isn’t the worst thing in the world, but the sequel trilogy is something I don’t ever have to watch again.

Happy Friday, Addie. Star Wars: The Force Awakens was the very first Star Wars movie that I saw in the theater, I saw it twice. My favorite part of the movie was when Finn, Rey & BB-8 flew the Millennium Falcon out of the planet Jakku, because of it being filmed in IMAX. And yes, the death of Han Solo was very tragic indeed. May the force be with you, Addie.
