Lucas didn't want to have Nazis as the enemies again, which is why he decided to set it a year before "Lost Ark." But at least he also changed Indy's character accordingly, since he's a bit more jaded and self-interested for much of this movie (we sort of find out why in the prologue for "Last Crusade") until having an epiphany at the end, which leads him into how his character is in "Lost Ark" (which is why I prefer people to start with this one)... and his romantic interest is also more of a shallow, pampered showbiz type here. Of course, Spielberg's decision to revert to certain earlier elements in "Last Crusade" kind of made this outing feel like a victim of the ol' *one of these things is not like the others* sentiment for years as a result (until "Crystal Skull" was finally made), which is why I feel a lot of people (myself included) perhaps subconsciously don't look on it as highly.

Hmmm... what creature will we see a copious amount of in the next one? 🤨 Both Spielberg and Lucas were going through difficult periods (i.e. divorces/breakups) when making this, which is why it has a decidedly darker tone. Also, the guard Indy fights on the conveyer belt is the same stuntman who played the mechanic that Indy fought below the plane in "Lost Ark." One last thing: the 3 protagonists are all named after the dogs the filmmakers had at the time: Lucas had a dog named 'Indiana,' Spielberg had one named 'Willie,' and screenwriters Willard Huyck and Gloria Katz had one named 'Short Round.'

Not to spoil too much, but to make you feel better about the snakes, the number of scenes that have snakes in the remaining movies aren't as many as the first movie. I'm sure it's been mentioned, but I can never figure out why this movie was released after "Raiders of the Lost Ark" if it was actually a prequel to that movie. Fun Fact #1: Director Steven Spielberg met his future wife Kate Capshaw, who plays Willie, while filming this movie. Fun Fact #2: This movie, along with the movie Gremlins(which I highly recommend for around Christmas time) prompted the first two PG-13 rated movies. Looking forward to your next reaction. 😊
