So now that I'm actually up and moving on This Thing, I'd like to actually use this little semi-regular blog thing that really should be more regular now as a means of putting in my little footnotes on the stuff that's showing up in the story. In that spirit, then:
- Van's fighting technique, The 52 Blocks? Entirely real, a method of self defense that we can confirm with solid fact has been used since the late 60s by convicts in the US prison system, but is also said and believed by many (including myself) to have deeper and older roots, in a fighting form used by a group of tribes destroyed by slavery and displaced to colonial America. Its techniques have influenced a number of significant and notable fighters throughout fightsports history, including heavyweight boxing legend George Foreman and modern day MMA warrior Yoel Romero. Here's a video of D'ialo Frazier, a master, trainer and innovator within the style, showing off how even though it's made to protect yourself, a capable choreographer, director and photographer can also make it look really spectacular and physically dominant.
- In case you were wondering, that exercise with the tennis ball Van was doing? Yep, also real.
- What comes next in the story? Transitions. We're going to learn more about characters we've only really met and gotten a vibe for, and they're going to show that they're not just there to be backdrop for Van. Taino's not a MacGuffin any more; Taino, is in fact a little sore over being a MacGuffin, and wants to rectify that slight.
More coming soon!
