Okay, I gotta ask: do you have any idea how bad it would be for the U.S. if an American warplane was seen taking out an unarmed freighter ship? That's basically China's wet-dream right there. The American government would come off as hot-headed idiots who overreact at the drop of a hat and the CCP would come across as the victim to a lot of people who are still on the fence. The CCP also has enough sway in the UN that they just might be able to strongarm some concessions out of the U.S., and even if they don't start a war over what happened it would be a permanent stain on America's reputation.
