There must be some verbal agreement between Xi and Hu about keeping the little Hu in the Politburo before the meeting started but then under Xi’s order Little Hu’s name was obliterated from the list. Li Zhanshu’s part in this drama was to keep Hu from reading the list (Li was caught in the camera wiping sweat from his face - he must have kept himself really busy for his task). Then while Hu was whisked away other officials were nonchalant as they were in the know and therefore had somehow prepared for something like this to happen but Little Hu was caught holding himself by his arms (a posture of self protection) and he was clearly very angry on the camera. We will never know what had happened but I think the above is probably the closest to the truth.
