CIA: Huawei Funded by Chinese Military

Apparently, Huawei gets some of its funding from the Chinese military. Even though it's a...um...totally private company.
That, plus news about indictments of Chinese spies who stole from GE, challenges with the Confucius Institutes, Chinese veterans getting shafted, and why you should never borrow from a Chinese loan shark (in case you were considering that).
This story strikes me as the mass media fundamentally misunderstanding the nature of Chinese industry in the context of the SOE. If an SOE has a profit motive stronger than a political motive it also has an incentive to produce secure products. You really can't decide what the Chinese government's priority is here. You can only guess. At the very least, you can say that the Chinese software and hardware engineers understand the products they produce better than their Western counterparts working with other companies. The Western engineers will find it much harder to recognize potential exploits within the software and hardware.
While I'm highly skeptical of Huawei tech products, I'm also highly skeptical of all Chinese products as well as any other high-tech devices regardless of origin. Exploits enter distribution chains through malicious action, errors due to excess complexity, and lack of budgets, competence, or time constraints on programmers and hardware engineers. It's been known for years that the internal programming on devices like microprocessors is so complex and deeply embedded that no single person or small team could understand it's function and purpose. It's more recently become obvious that there are new processor-based attack vectors to exploit.
Also, did any of you ever hear of the correction to the story claiming that back doors were already found in this company's products? This was journalistic fraud that served the purpose of drawing Congressional attention to a legitimate class of potential and potentially devistating vulnerabilities. Good move for any (Western based) upstart tech companies with the talent to do pen testing on Huawei products. This incident also drew attention to the vulnerability of ALL tech products regardless of manufacturer. Everyone short of secret intelligence services forgot this for decades.

Very interesting, and here I thought they were just being targeted over 'soft-power' attempts at control within the U.S economy. Great video Chris and Team :)
