#337 - You're Probably Using The WRONG String Height
Added 2024-08-09 14:30:01 +0000 UTC
My friends, I want to share something that we never talked about before - I recently posted a live video from my POV that went viral, and a lot of people commented about my seemingly 'high' action. That's why I wanted to share my settings and explain why I use them :)
I made another finger workout package for you, that will help you with figuring out your string height - here are your practice files (guitar pro, backing tracks, play-along videos, tabs): https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1aWUaoGhrCShFTTGNG3gob1ozq-RkA-ds?usp=sharing
In this video, I also show you my personal settings - but please don't just copy them, find something that works for you! We're all different, but universally I'd avoid string height that's much too low or much too high :)
P.S.: As always, I also made a Dropbox folder for you in case Google Drive doesn't work: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/8cejyjkj0nuq5rx1rnzl6/ABGOZPaYgZPOd7XaW1IT-ks?rlkey=ak7bn05lf0pucjaft60qxkwej&st=4l55bzib&dl=0
That rule is in mm with half mm marks. 1.5 mm roughly equals 4/64" which is a pretty good standard for action at the 12th fret.

I was worried about that too. Haven't gotten that far yet

I do. And exercise 4 is pretty much impossible for me on it lol!

Thanks. Going to download the new package now. Anyone else out there use a baritone guitar?

4/64 on the bass side, 3/64 on the treble measured at the 12th fret. Match the fretboard radius at the bridge, get the nut slots to do the “tink”, and get the neck as flat as possible without buzzing. I don’t not like relief in a neck. It creates a tension that I don’t like. However, some guitars require it.
I think this would be considered a medium/low action. I actually prefer playing on an action that is as low as possible but I have found that any lower than this and I can’t get my fat fingers underneath the strings for bending.

Can you make a video about setting up my guitar? I have an Ibanez RG550 Genesis guitar, which is an AWESOME guitar ... but ... I suck at the setup, and it keeps going out of tune. I don't know how to adjust my neck properly, I don't know how to properly tune this and I see a lot of varying techniques, but man this Ibanez Edge bridge is a real PITA.

Timing could not have been better for this! I'm in the middle of setting up my guitar for new string gauges on a floating floyd rose bridge, and I'm still making adjustments!

Funny seeing this today, I lowered my action a week or two ago on one of my guitars, I think i'm going to raise it a little again though as it caused some issues. Side not Joe Pass preferred to have his action as high as possible...

Instead of practicing in boxes try practicing across the neck. Here's a great video to get you started, Ben Eller titled "The 3+4 Scale Pattern Secret you NEED to know!"

Hi everyone. A quick question if anyone can help. How can I get rid of my mindset of staying in only 1 postion on the fretboard and not moving around. I want to movement in my playing but I make a tiny melody and after i m like locked in my scale or maximum 2 modes which are one next to each other like aeolian and locrian.
