#323 - PICKING MISTAKES 92% of Guitarists make & how to fix them

My friends, this week I have a killer inside/outside picking workout for you! :) This is one of my current main workouts in my practice routine, because I want to further improve fast string transitions and string skipping, beyond patterns that come naturally. So I thought sharing it with you is a great idea!

Download your practice files for this week (play-along workout, tabs, guitar pro files, backing tracks): https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1lA0OXWty-rlyZ957htfnK0W-S63YST0k?usp=sharing

Please also remember that I made a full 30-day course about hand synchronization for you! This one should help in case you feel like your synchronization is falling apart at the higher tempos. You can find it in this post: https://www.patreon.com/posts/191-best-5-min-56222239

And as aways, I also made a Dropbox link in case Google Drive doesn't work for you: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/zyf0arbikksgt8864trwg/AMVHZQVOjwYQoM4OnsnmDlY?rlkey=zxoqg6pu6frwc6xoaw85u2qtn&st=2vchjcmn&dl=0

Okay, then let me try to simplify the question. How do you approach the 8th fret on the B and high E string? Completely out of your wrist?

Hey there, to make sure to get the best feedback on your technique, just post a video in the VIP Facebook group - over there, you will get personalized feedback that will actually help with solving issues like this! It's sadly not possible to help without seeing the issue when you're playing (it might send you in the wrong direction, resulting in more frustration). Hope that helps, have a great weekend! I really like this exercise. But I have one question to bernth. Are we supposed to use our elbow to reach the 8th fret on the B and high E string? Because I feel at higher tempos that I am not able to perform the movement in time just coming out of my wrist. Using the elbow seems to give me much better results here.

Wooo! The last lvl I can complete it each time now and my picking coherence and articulation has gotten a lot better over the past few months as I revisit my technique basics to strengthen my overall skill. The last lvl though really tenses up the underside of the forearm muscle but it may be because I do every lvl in order without stopping and it’s just my physical muscle strength waining lol.

Hey Godwin, thanks for the great question! For those seeking a structured practice plan in guitar technique and theory, Bernth typically recommends starting with our 30-day courses. These courses cover a wide range of essential techniques, structured into 5-day blocks, with the aim of completing a workout challenge focused on mastering your chosen technique. Bernth has already developed packages on alternate picking, sweep picking, legato, hand synchronization, and tapping. You can easily access them by navigating to 'Collections' and then selecting 'Patreon Online Courses'. For instance, if you're interested in improving your picking technique, you can begin with this one: patreon.com/posts/173-4-min-shred-52210347 Simply click on the Google Drive folders provided in each post to access all your necessary files. I sincerely hope this information helps you get started on your journey. If you have any further questions or need assistance, feel free to reach out. Wishing you an awesome day ahead!

Hey there, the link to the course that Bernth mentioned in the video is in this exact post you commented on - please always read the description, that usually helps a lot! :) You can also find all other courses by navigating to 'Collections' and 'Patreon Online Courses'. The search box is also really helpful when you look for specific topics or courses (just use a keyword like 'picking' and you will get all videos about this topic). Hope that helps, have an awesome day! Team Bernth

Hey, Bernth, thank you for your lessons. But I find it hard to navigqate through all of the videos, e.g. you mentioned "Hand syncrhonization course" which is a hard thing to find. Do you plan on making the videos structured? At least creating/updating the current colections you have created?

Grigoriy Mikhalchuk

AWESOME! I am going to start working on this right away

This is a killer lesson

Hey Bernth, I just joined your Patreon community as full member and I’m a bit confused where to start. I’ve watched the “Where to start” and I’m still confused about to what to do and how to approach the lessons. I’d say I’m an intermediate player with 2 years experience but I want to actually practice my techniques in a more structured way and also learn more Metal songs. I downloaded Patreon after watching one of your video. A little help would be amazing, Thank you.

Godwin

Thanks a lot Adam and Bernth.

Welcome Harin, and thanks to Adam for the great input! Here's the link to the Legato Course, that should definitely help (you can find the download link in this post): https://www.patreon.com/posts/184-ultimate-30-54171102 Team Bernth

This might be in the top 5 lessons yet. Bernth, we need more short repeatable scale pattern exercises like this please!!!

The 30 day legato course is great. #184 - 30 Day Legato Course is the one to look for. Last week's video had great stuff too.

Hey Bernth, Big Fan… I just joined the Community and i’ve started with the Alternate picking 30 day course and simultaneously i’ve started to correct my left hand technique. It has only been a week since i changed my left hand technique and my playing has become much worse as a result of the technique correction process….can you please suggest me videos for the Left hand technique correction so that I don’t go down the wrong path…Thanks a lot. I’ve been playing guitar for a year now, did make progress but with the wrong technique and want to correct it now so please suggest me the videos which would help me.
