#264 - Best exercises for SHORT practice routines!
Added 2023-03-10 15:30:01 +0000 UTC
My friends, it's finally time for a new in-depth lesson! One of our most active members, Mark, recently sent me an excellent question: what are the best exercises you could do if you just have a couple of minutes to practice?
Not all exercises are suited for quick practice sessions (due to moving slowly through the BPM ladder or due to simply not being suited as warm-ups), so these are the best workouts that I use whenever I need really quick results (like warming up quickly before a show or recording session).
Some of them are familiar favorites, but wait for the last one - that's a fun challenge you can do at work or anywhere else without a guitar :)
I made a guitar pro file and tabs for you (attached below) so that you can work on them - since they are quite simple (and you will mostly use them for super-quick sessions), I didn't make long play-along files. But please let me know if one of these stands out for you, I'd be happy to make additional files in the upcoming lessons :)
Until then, have an amazing weekend my friends!
Hey there, here's a great video to get started with this - hope it helps: https://www.patreon.com/posts/117-5-best-how-42103016

Just love these exercises - thank you.
Since I come from a classical 'very basic' kind of guitar decades ago (yes, I am old-ish!)- i.e. no metal strings, I love the 'classical' style imprinted into Metal and Symphonic metal -it is just great.
My ears love it!

here i am perplexed by my own finger and knowledge, on the 2nd exercise, when you say chord, is there like a specific chord shape i should be doing or should i just follow along?

Just when you think you're not a pretty good guitar player . . . then you realize you can barely play the "warm-ups" at a decent rate of speed.

I suggest to take the #166 - 15 Minute Daily Warmup Routine, for instance. for this type of hiatus, same as I had, started one year ago, and Bernth is, by far, the best in Internet

I'm coming back to guitar after about an 8 year Hiatus. I knew then that my technique was what was holding me back but the amount of work needed to correct it seemed daunting. I found your YouTube channel a few weeks ago and have decided I'm going to put the work in to fix it all. It'll be a long journey, but hopefully the end result is that I become the guitarist I always wanted to be.

I can move my ring fingers up and down off a table, with my other fingers still touching the surface, but MAN they're weak. My favorite is the 2NPS chord/arpeggio alternate picking. I usually start with Bm7 then work my way up the neck to D7 at fret 17, then back down. I'm not shreddy fast, but my alt picking and string transition techniques have really improved! Thanks very much for that one, Bernth!!

Hey. I have a question, I'm only doing the first exercise for now, and I'm wondering if my picking hand should be floating? Or should I anchor my palm on the bridge without muting?

Would love to hear your thoughts on what to do with the three fingers of your picking hand that don't hold the pick. I noticed you always seem to make a "fist", while I personally always gravitated to a more open style, so pointing them away from the pick. Any particular reason or would you say it's simply personal preference and no advantages?

Ha, the ring finger exercise - I thought that was just me that couldn't operate independently and have been randomly trying to improve that over the past few months.

Number 5 is a classic. Really easy to do at work and had definitely helped me.

What's funny is I can do the last one easily with no challenge but everything else will take some work.
Thanks for the exercises!
