#254 - Music Theory Masterclass (Beginner To Advanced)

My friends, as a special present for the holidays, I'd like to present this structured music theory masterclass today!

Since music theory is the #1 topic on the wishlist this month, I thought it would be a great idea to put all the most important concepts so far into one course-style video that starts with beginner topics and ends with advanced topics :)

Here's a compressed and downloadable video of the full course: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1h46nQEuQinQ3HMQZpg38X79dHISwQtms/view?usp=share_link

And a Dropbox link in case Google Drive doesn't work for you: https://www.dropbox.com/s/m5mdlfz2lza03ft/%23254%20-%20Music%20Theory%20Masterclass%20%28Compressed%20Video%29.mp4?dl=0

#254 - Music Theory Masterclass (Beginner To Advanced)

Comments

Hi @Bernth, would E Phrygian Dominant be a mode of A Harmonic Minor as they both have a G# but start and end on a different note? Would mean the 5th mode of the Harmonic Minor would be the Phrygian Dominant?

Tanjim Rahman

Hey there, that's because all these topics are featured in that same video! :) Hope that helps, Team Bernth

Bernd Brodträger

chapter 4 also links to #121

Simon Tan

Hi Bernth and team, the link for chapter 1 and chapter 3 seems to be the same although in the text it looks different, they both point to #121, is there another link for chapter 3 to try?

Simon Tan

I subscribed to the patreon thinking it would be filled with sexy pictures on bernth.....a little disappointed but all this guitar stuff is amazing!!

Zach Willis

Thanks for lesson, i have to say that for me personally it's hard to hear the note interval clearly when using distortion also when learning the interval sound for the first time.

Romzop

Hey there, we just checked and all links are still online and work. Which ones are you having problems with? The individual shortened links just lead to other Patreon videos, where you will find the full lesson on each topic with a download link of the files. Hope that helps Team Bernth

Bernd Brodträger

the links are not working :( can you fix it?

Beholder7

Thank you so much for this

Heidi Hobbs

Triads are 3 note chords. Prob the most important thing about them is they are a prerequisite for more advanced topics, but in a simple sense they are the "essence" of most other chords (e.g. Cm7 is a minor triad with root C, plus a minor 7th notes).

Eric R

So quick questions, first off, i don't know much about Music theory, what are triads ? why are they shown and what should i do with them ? i don't want to learn them by heart not understanding what i do yknow ^^

Sohlarys

worked through chapter 1: note location and chapter 2: Intervals. I enjoy your videos and it has been helpful in my guitar progress. Working through Economy picking course and alternate picking masterclass as well.

Mitch

Was a bad download, sounds great now and thanks for the very clear lessons!

Robert

This video looks great but the audio is very distorted

Robert

Recently I was struggling how to proceed with your music theory courses because there are so many. Thx 4 that christmas order. It will help me a lot next year 🙏

Stefan Halbritter

Was thinking just yesterday that I wanted to incorporate more music theory into my practice. Thanks Bernth!

Mark

Bernth I LOVE YOU! your lessons are amazing!

Rapunzel F

nice done!!!!!!!!

Alex Russkovichi

Ah that makes sense. Thank you ! I’m gonna try that.

Ed

Ed M, Bernth says that most people don't learn how to run by walking a little bit faster daily. Most people, usually in early childhood, immediately go from walking to trying to run. When you first try to run, it may not be super fast, and it may not be very elegant. Most little kids even fall easily when they try to run. In the case of learning how to play fast, sometimes trying to slowly increment BPM by BPM hinders the learning process. There is a different "feel" to playing something at 50 BPM compared to 100 BPM compared to 150 BPM. Just like your body feels very different when you walk compared to running. Sometimes, you must start doing the faster BPM and be okay with it being very sloppy. It's the only way to start getting used to the "feel" of playing that particular thing fast. For whatever it's worth, I have only been able to make the "jump" to faster BPMs by setting the metronome to the higher speed and then doing it over and over and over again. I usually do 5 minutes of play and a 1-minute break. I then repeat that over and over again for 45-60 minutes a day. After a couple of days, sometimes a couple of weeks, everything finally starts working. But, it is VERY messy and sloppy for a while before I get to that point. Everyone is different, though. So what works for me may or may not work for you. Hope that helps. 🤘

Mark Sanders

Thanks! I’ll check it out. Edit: I watched it but I don’t get it. Eli5 please? Since walking don’t work, you have to run? Meaning it’s a whole new mechanic/technique to master? Or i have to up my game at that same bpm where i’ve been stuck for a week? Eli5 pls pls pls

Ed

Hi Ed M, Take a look at Step 3 on https://www.patreon.com/posts/167-extreme-in-5-50839230

Mark Sanders

Hi Bernth! What do I do when I get stuck on a certain metronome speed? Like maybe 105? Do I slow down a bit? Or keep on that speed until I get it? Or change to a new exercise?

Ed

Hey friends, it looks like this video was set to private in the first hours - now it should work for everyone :) Thanks for your patience and happy holidays 🤘

Bernd Brodträger

Yes, these are all taken from that episode! Have an awesome day!

Bernd Brodträger

Nice, that's exactly what I was looking for. Well how do you guys go about learning all the notes on the fretboard? I'm currently in Drop C and wondering if I should learn the notes in Standard or Drop Tunings. Thanks!

Martin Lohmann

I like how you did this. It makes sense to take prior tutorials and combine them into a single course. The only potential problem I see is chapters 1, 3, and 4 all link to video #121. Is that what you intended? Thanks for all you do, and have a wonderful holiday.

Scot A. Griffin

What is the difference between this and #214 Guitar theory course?

harsh ghesani

I'm seeing that too. It looks like you can watch it in the Google drive link, though.

Chris Nixon

The video is private

Gabriel Feno

Thank you Bernth!

Harbinger

Thanks so much for your video and lesson's. I appreciate it 🙏

Kailie Peirce

hmm it says video is unavailable/private
