#249 - Writing A Song From Start To Finish

My friends, you voted for it, and you get it: in today's video, I write a song from start to finish together with you :) I hope my workflow gives you some ideas for your own process!

As a bonus, I also exported all the tracks of the project for you - so if you have a DAW, you can try mixing or remixing it yourself: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/10Z3oqMGpss44_8GseXjmlWiE149D0dfB?usp=sharing

Remember to upload your version to the VIP Facebook group for feedback or just to share what you came up with! You can also make this into a track of your own, I'd love to see and hear you get creative this week :) Have fun!

By the way, here's a Dropbox link in case Google Drive doesn't work for you: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/r0kz4t3obv3h4l2c8y2zz/h?dl=0&rlkey=pyt7godhspc0o02v9ojz9hno7

#249 - Writing A Song From Start To Finish

I really missed this one. It's amazing 🤩 wow didn't I see it until now 😅 I think that's there is more trick that i can apply to must of my song. Sometimes I forget the initial idea of riffage and then I recorded as you say, but after a lot of take I can't "fix" one take to reproduce this in for the Left or Right channel . This way I have a different riff on the L and R

This is how I would personally approach finding a consistent routine, hope it helps: https://www.patreon.com/posts/232-how-to-build-68819801

I really like to do a lot of takes, but sometimes I end up choosing one of the first ones - so it's not that it takes a lot of takes until the 'perfect' one, they are all a bit different and it's great to just sit back and listen to find the best one for the arrangement :)

Bernd Brodträger

Am I seeing that you did 85+ measures of that riff to find the perfect one? I am starting to really get into recording and making my own jam tracks. It is blowing my mind how much I really don't know. Excellent video, thank you for making it!

Hi Bernth! I super like your stuff and feel like I'm getting better thanks to you. Every piece of your work is very instructive. But after the lessons and challenges I always get lost in what to do next to put all the pieces together. Could you help me? If we have some kind of trail, a path or a star in the sky... Maybe you've already done that and I don't know...

I mostly just use the Drum Bus 1 & 2 presets, I'm not sure which kind of pack or expansion they are part of! The difference is not that big, but the drums do sound louder and more articulated this way (a bit of compression and an EQ shape)

Bernd Brodträger

Hi Bernth, Thanks for this lesson! Can you tell us the EZ Mix Pack you used for the drums? Thank you!

Stephan

If your taking request for future lessons to post on patreon I would like a lesson on how I can come up with anything on how to write good ideas for sweep picking and how I can turn that to a really good skill

Max

You are so totally different to me when it comes to songwriting ^^ Always feels like you are mostly going with theory, while I am just... well... playing my guitar and when I feel like there is a good lick or riff, I start to compose a whole song around it. The only thing I really have in mind doing this is... keeping the song in one key. Although in my early days not even that... I was often switching between 2 or even 3 keys in a song. I kind of miss that "skill" since the songs sounded more interesting... today I am kind of afraid to do it that way. I don't know why since the old stuff sounded pretty good, too. The rest of my songwriting is just... jaming along... guitar pro is helping here... while writing songs I always write it down there simultaneously and then I am playing guitar other the riff or melody until I find something cool that fits. Works pretty good for me.

It would be best to have a video tutorial on this with a theory and guitar technique behind so that we can use it as a blue print for our song writing exploration in the future. Thanks Bernth for this awesome video!

tab please? =3

you could try using dirtrokid

Dave

hey Bernth, i have the pitchproof plugin but it has a very low quality tone, are there maybe different versions of it? could you send the download link for it?

Dave

What’s your method of copyrighting and distributing your music

Perry

Yes it's there now. Thanks

Michael

It took a while to sync, should be online now! :)

Bernd Brodträger

Bernth, great lesson. The timing is perfect. BTW - the file "Full Tutorial.mp4" is not in the Dropbox download but is in the Google Drive listing.

Michael

Just checked and it works on my end, seems to work for everyone else as well (please let me know if that's not the case!) - I added the full video for you in the Google Drive folder now!
