#245 - Neoclassical Sweeping Play-Along Workout

My friends, let's work on our technique chops this week! You voted for a neoclassical sweeping workout, so I'm happy to deliver a really cool etude just for you :)

Download all your practice files here (play-along workout, tabs, guitar pro file, backing track, instructions): https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Dgf9aQFWoCu4LO66-qavXKKHoK6xCOlz?usp=sharing

The main goal is to connect the arpeggios nicely with slides to get a relaxed and fluid sound with your arpeggios and sweeping sections. It will help to start very slow, but also don't be afraid to push your limits - it might sound sloppy at first, but it will teach your hands what to do as soon as you can actually play at these tempos!

As always, here's a Dropbox link in case Google Drive doesn't work for you: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/wsdxrky5iltsxgs/AABuM2JjVw6gGtgGbzYOPWzHa?dl=0

And here's the link to the 30-day course for more basic exercises: https://www.patreon.com/posts/178-best-5-sweep-53365055

#245 - Neoclassical Sweeping Play-Along Workout

Can finally play at 160 coherently after several weeks of being stuck between 140 and 150, depending on the day lol. gonna continue to hit 160 to work on cleanliness. Thanks for the AWESOME workout!

For a long time I struggled with notes sounding ever so slightly out of pitch and I could never figure out why until my jam buddy pointed out how hard I was gripping the neck. I actually had to go back to slower speeds and relearn everything in a more "relaxed" state of playing. I can personally attest that for me my speed ceiling playing clean increased SUBSTANTIALLY after I taught myself to play as relaxed as possible. Hopefully you find this relevant to you :)

I was playing this exercise today. And I noticed something odd. I've been playing it it for a few months now. I can comfortably play it at 80bpm and barely well at 100. But today, at the at 50bpm, I realised that I was pressing the fret-board really hard. Like a vice. So then I decided to press lightly and I'm struggling to play at 60BPM. Is this a normal thing?

Great practice honestly not dragged out entertaining as well, spoiling us!

Josh James

100!

3 months 90bpm

Okay, I'm over an hour in, and I've made it through the first lick. This ought to keep me busy for a while.

I'd love to, I will add it to the next voting! Let's see how the Gold/VIP/Platinum members decide :)

Hi Bernth, thanks again for this awesome piece. Could you by any chance make a video about how this special "neoclassical" feeling works music-theory wise (or throw in a simple explanation, if there is one)? Is that some special mode or a special combination/progression of scales? I am so in love with this one and also the Paganini piece (Caprice), that share a similar feel to me :-)

Hi, so cool thanks Bernth :) try hard this lesson and enjoy it a lot !!!

Thanks so much for the reminder, I added the link to the post - here it is again: https://www.patreon.com/posts/178-best-5-sweep-53365055

Hi, I am new here so not sure how to navigate around real will yet. The video said there would be a 30 day sweep picking course link in the description for newbies who want to learn this technique, but I don't see a link to the 30 day sweep course. Can someone tell me where I can find it?

Daniel

Hi Bernth, I think there is a note missing right in the end. The 2nd to last note is not on the tabs. Could you please check and, if so, maybe just correct the tabs? Thanks for the attention :)

Amin Amirali

i hereby deem this one the “maybe next year”

Brian Carman

Do you know which one the beginner course is? I thought the same as you and went to Lesson #178 and am doing the mini-course linked there.

MG

Love your sweep picking lessons. I bought the sweep picking tutorial and also this. I think i'm caught in the middle as from learning your course to sweep through and rest the pick on the next string. Even when quick I get a horrible click, click sound. Is there a middle section to help the transition from slower to quicker without pick 'clunk'. ___ UPDATE ____ Got no answers from anyone. Although my wrist and elbow was relaxed, My shoulder being tensed caused the issue. Love these patreon videos but if no one is helping anyone, what's the point. May aswell save the money.

Future Me: Year 15 of banging this every day... Finally 140 BPM :D

Yannick Häke

To say I’m pumped up for this would be an understatement! Hell yeah!!!!

Joey Hocking

Jeeeeeesus!!!!!!!!!

p4tt4nz

Nice composition and a great exercise. Bernth, it will be great if you can mention on the tabs the tonality (key) in which every section is so that it will be easier to understand what we re playing. Thank you very much for the great lessons. :-)

Evan

thx

jaz

Bernth: Please contact Konami and get this put into their next Castlevania game. It's all I can think about! 😂🤟🏻

Eric Bailey

You‘re damn right, me too 🙈🙈🙈. Thought this couldn‘t be played faster than 120bpm. Well - Bernth proofed me wrong…

Michael Sax

Just in time, was gonna look at Malmsteen stuff to practice this kind of stuff but this is even better!

Anthony Sanchez

guess I'm off to the beginner's course :D

Nick Peth

At 120BPM sounds a lot like Vinnie Moore. Very cool one!

Ivan Roselli

uwohooo weekend training!

Luis Gustavo Loebel

Love this one, as it still sounds great if you play it at ~70bpm or so. I'll definitively give this a try!
