#243 - 2 Advanced Picking Technique Concepts

My friends, it's finally time for another in-depth picking lesson! Since we didn't have any clear winner left on the September wishlist, I want to show you what I am currently working on :)

Instead of throwing yet another play-along workout at you (like I did quite a lot in September), I'd like you to try out these approaches with a couple of familiar exercises. That's also what I am doing at the moment and it really helps with identifying the string noise/finger/thumb issues I'm talking about in the video!

Here's a folder that I made that features useful exercises for these new topics: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/14cN6W6gtcn8TLQj1U6Hbt1v7Dy5wM8U9?usp=sharing

I will post the next wishlist very soon and can't wait to see how you will decide! In the meantime, I hope you have an amazing weekend and an amazing start to October :)

And by the way, this week's file package is a bit too big for Dropbox (it may crash all the links on the site permanently if the download volume is breached) - but it consists of lessons #235, #223, #217, and #212 :)

When you look at 2:14 how he is holding the pick, he must rotate it later, otherwise the point of the pick is pointing to the neck and you are not able to pick. Or am I wrong ?

this is perfect for me atm. Currently learning the Pschosocial solo

I see your pinky curling under the neck in Exercise 1. From all the lessons I've come across, I'm supposed to learn to avoid that. I've tried to consciously control while playing along the exercise but not getting any better. Is it ok in this specific case if the pinky does curl?

Sohrab Singh Ishar

Hi, does this picking technique works with hybrid? if so how? Thanks 🀘🀘🀘

Hai,..I can't play guitar at all, I don't understand the scales on the guitar, I don't understand the meaning of notes, but I really want to be able to play melodies, that's why I joined Patreon

so i get up to 100 bpm then it all falls apart, my pick is between my thumb and first join index finger , i notices it feels a little cleaner between thumb and second joint index. problem is i can see my problem is all down to my picking angle and picking hand in general , i just gotta adjust to find the right way . its annoying because i know its my problem but atleast i know sorta what need to be fixed

There's no doubt that I have improved my playing from working on your videos. However, I just can't seem to shake this stupid bouncing while alternate picking as I speed up. I'm so frustrated by it!

David Elliott

One addition for my fellow students, as it is not said in the video: If I recall correctly, Bernth uses Jazz III Picks which are very hard picks (1.38mm). Using a much softer pick will probably make it impossible to shred effectively. ...or is @Bernth up for a challenge? ;-)

Fhynix

Thanks for this video! Again you exactly covered the issues I am currently working on. And, as I was typing "Is it ok to have your palm touch your strings?" - BAM! you spoke about exactly that in the video. This is a very welcome confirmation of my current progress and motivates me a lot :-) I'd love another course on picking technique, if possible with a stronger focus on pick grip, palm position, playing position, picking angle and all these things.

Fhynix

I like that tighter pick grip, the pick feels less loose and floppy so my timing and control feels improved. It's going to take a bit of work to change my gripping habits though.

Mark J

And there you have it... the main reason why I am using an open hand approach, cause of accidently touching the strings ;)

Sephiroth

Hello Bernth and fellow students! I saw the information about pick grip on another channel about 6 months ago. It was a challenging transition, but it really pays off. As far as the string noise, I'm guessing that muting on the fretting/picking hand will not work because even if the strings are muted the sound of your hand going up and down over the strings will make a "brushing" type of sound. Am I understanding correctly? Finally, as I lift my elbow, it feels natural to place my palm on the bridge, kinda like a teeter-totter motion if you are looking at the different positions (elbow on guitar vs off) Is this correct?

Brandon Roth

Hi Bernth, thanks for the lesson. I noticed when you show the close up your pick is 90 degrees in between your 2 finger joints however when you moved it to playing position the pick seems to move to a 45-degree angle and hang over the top finger joint a bit is that correct. Can't quite see from camara angle. I spent some time on it today but can't quite make it work for me yet. Also when i take the grip down to playing position it is almost 90 degrees to the string and tone gets weird.

philipp kopfli

I tried your pick grip approach and dunno if it works for me. Suddenly my guitar became uncomfortable to play. I have this feeling that in order to get clean notes I would need to switch to heavier pics. My opnion/comment.

Jan KuΕΊmicki

I also recently started lifting the elbow for some more speed haha awesome

jaz

As I've experimented in the last couple years with various high speed picking techniques, I started lifting my arm slightly as well and the results were surprising. It took minor adjustment to maintain precision but the speed increase was immediately noticeable.

Andrew Zweckbronner

Thank you Bernth!

Philip Mullins

hello Bernth, this summer with the heat, my arm tended to stick to the body of the guitar and blocked the movements. I experienced the same thing. I found it interesting but not very comfortable at first. I will continue in this direction

Khoudj

Thanks to your picking angle alternate picking workouts, things became so much more professional for me. On the 4th exercise I was also struggling with the thumb on the lower strings but no clue why, things became natural and I developed a hand angle where I can change the picking angle and without rubbing the strings. I’ll check out if the forearm was one crucial parameter and if it helps me out with your recent control & endurance picking package!
