#241 - String Bending & Vibrato Workout

My friends, you voted for string bending and vibrato - so I'm happy to present a killer workout today! Bending through scales will improve your intonation so much and I can't wait for you to try this out.

Here are your practice files for this week (backing tracks, guitar pro file, tabs, video play-along, instructions): https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1wzOfeZlhjto7BoIx69fyStqKOIdVbWKP?usp=sharing

Please go easy on your fingers if you never worked that much on bending so far - this will probably hurt a bit if you're just starting out! But if you have this workout in your routine for a couple of weeks, you will see a huge difference in your bending and vibrato capabilities.

As always, here's a Dropbox link in case Google Drive doesn't work for you: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/15whr30re7h26pr/AAANgsdK3F5O-VUEpuD5af4ga?dl=0

#241 - String Bending & Vibrato Workout

Comments

I made myself an alternate picking exercise based on combination of tutorials that ends on a quarter note. I want to add a vibrato on the last note to let it ring out for the rest of the measure before looping. Only the last note ends under my pinky. Got me thinking, should I care to practice vibrato with my pinky, Is that even a thing? Or should I try to hit that last note with index or middle finger? Is there a general guide on what fingers are most effective to use for vibrato? How about ring finger?

In my case, as I bend and the curled finger goes almost flat, it lifts the string off the fret so it mutes the string. I do not get a clean string bending over the fret when I go for full bends. Any fix other than just practice?

Stuck on Enter the Sandman solo. Having issues with multiple fast unison bends and noise when releasing bends :|

I tend to get string noise from the string I am bending towards. My finger catches it on the way back. Which makes it difficult to get a clean sound. In the video you are also using multiple fingers to bend the string versus one. Neither is explained in this exercise. The vibrato was not explained in the video. What makes those cryptic videos on the internet so frustrating is that the basics are never explained. They assume that were all guitar geniuses who make no mistakes. Phrasing exercises #197 has a bending exercise as exercise #3 in case anyone want's more exercises.

I love this! I asked for this about a year ago! So happy on how this was approached, you’re a great teacher!

One question to this: I've noticed that you play all the bends with the ring finger. Would you recommend to train the other fingers too or is that a wasted skill? I personally struggle a lot with bends if a tab requires you to pull them off with the index finger with no support from any other fingers and prefer to always use ring- or middle finger. What are your thoughts to this?

i've got the same problem, with active pickups. need more compression, maybe?

I would love a lesson on phrasing in solos. Even common techniques and exercises in considering phrasing in solos and riff construction

Hm... how are you doing it, that the strings are ringing so long and you just have to pick again for the vibrato? I can't get that working and have to pick every second note (except for the highest strings where they are ringing). Is that just a matter of pickups (I am using passives, guess actives would helo here), amp/effect settings or also technique? Also I have a hard time doing that without unwanted noise... any tips?

Killer lesson. More of this please especially about vibrato. There are so many techniques about that (big up and down motion, cycling motion of the finger, left to right motion instead of up and down etc etc). It is so interesting. All the players say that vibrato makes you a good guitar player or not. Also, can you do a different lesson about bend and release, release and bend and bend and vibrato? Once again thanks for the great lesson.

Evan

hmm. you spoke of the thumb not really how the fingers are being used. I guess its personal preference.

This workout video came at such a perfect time for me, this is exactly what I need right now!

Dylan Bontz

Great lesson!

Oh yes! A technique that I’ve been working on lately but without much progress thus far. Thank you so much for these workouts Bernth!

Mark McNish

I didn't see you very much excited this time, are you tired?

bulentkamali
