#240 - Jazz Theory For Metal/Rock (what I learned by studying jazz guitar)

My friends, it's time for the first wishlist lesson this month! Before we dive into string bending and vibrato, I want to tackle the topic of Jazz Theory for Metal/Rock players. I studied Jazz at the Vienna Music Institute for over 4 years, and in this video, I want to present my most important takeaways :)

Here are your files for this week (rhythmic sightreading exercises, jazz standard lead sheet analysis, song list suggestions for your practice routine): https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Lj_U2u6-Hqz2zjeGJu6rCz0MXcxxryIe?usp=sharing

I would love to dive deeper into Jazz theory - for now, make sure to fill out the second rhythmic sightreading sheet and write the scale degrees over a lead sheet of your choice! That's a great way of getting started, hope you have fun :)

By the way, here's a Dropbox folder in case Google Drive doesn't work for you: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/qt1fyut0nmdm2zx/AAAcoa1PeN2IlLePxpn8DllWa?dl=0

This is right up my alley, as I love both metal and jazz. Thank you!

I really wish I could do something like this! Very much appreciate the insight and your experience studying Music in college.

I've always had a sincere love for Jazz and I certainly want to learn more of it to meld with my playing. It simply gives such a unique and colorful voicing to everything when applied.

Super helpful. I actually play Autumn Leaves frequently, this will help me quite a bit. Du bist der Meister Bernth

I want more Bernth…

Lessons are getting better and better. Bernth if you can do more lessons like that with practical examples (i.e jazz cadences or licks and rhytmic paterns that are common to rock and metal music) will be much appreciated. Also, another interesting topic will be how we can spice up our songs using borrowed chords. Thanks. :-)

Evan

It would be interesting to have a lesson about the song analyzing (finding the key etc…)

It's always awesome to learn more about your musical journey! It sounds incredibly fun and terrifying at the same time πŸ˜‚ Playing with and learning from others who are better at and share our passion is definitely the way to go. That's exactly why you inspired me to start taking lessons again after a 20+ year hiatus! πŸ€ŸπŸ»β˜•οΈ
