#233 - Modal Interchange & Chord Substitution

Welcome back, my friends! You voted for a theory lesson this week, so I'm happy to present your chosen topics: the Modal Interchange and Chord Substitution!

Here's the cheat sheet with all information from this lesson (and a Guitar Pro file with the chords and examples): https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1ryvOdY3ImWVLP7_drVLT3iiRvccEVni5?usp=sharing

Here's the lesson on the modes I talked about in the video (in case you need to refresh your memory about this): https://www.patreon.com/posts/106-this-is-how-39916834

Don't forget to check out the homework in the Google Drive/Dropbox folder! I'd love to see and hear your progressions with Modal Interchanges or Chord Substitutions in the VIP Facebook group :) Have fun nerding out, my friends!

Here's a Dropbox link in case Google Drive doesn't work for you: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/teyzovrrehzbbh9/AAAYa69BgmjLUKiU3aQeVDHTa?dl=0

#233 - Modal Interchange & Chord Substitution

Comments

Well I made it to 100 bpm before I fell apart first time through. It got a little sloppy at 90bpm but still could hear all the notes clearly.

I always wanted to know why going this chord change sounds good - from a major chord to another major chord up a minor third. So, like an Emaj to Gmaj, or Amaj to Cmaj. There's a semitone difference in the scales, but it's very rock. Actually, I think I figured it out. It's in Emaj and borrows from an Emin scale with the Gmaj chord. Hope that makes sense.

I really enjoyed this class! thank you!

Hey friends, it looks like some of you had some issues with the Dropbox link - I swapped it, please let me know if it works now :) Have an awesome weekend everyone!

i feel like i have a pretty good grasp on theory. the gap i cant ever seem to bridge is from theory to application... its like i know the words of the language... but cant form sentences. I think if anyone can help me cross that gap its probabaly Bernth!

Yes!!!

Thomas Buck

Another great lesson, it must be going in somewhere, because I find I am not looking lost when you say certain things, I am starting to undersstand what you are going to suggest, fingers may not be catching up yet, but I am working on that., thanks Bernth, have great weekend.

Steve Shaw

I had no clue in the intermediate music theory course why you were replacing Gm7 and Fm7 with F7 and G7 (dominant) chords in the improvisation Cmin backing track. It was modal interchange to make it more interesting, isn’t it?
