#228 - Beginner Vs PRO Drummer (feat. Makhx)

My friends, you voted for the topic of home recording/producing on the wishlist - so since a lot of you sent me questions about programming drums for your songs and demos, I wanted to do something very special :)

I invited pro drummer and friend Makhx to the studio and in this video, we check out the biggest differences between professional drummers and programmed drum takes by guitarists! I learned so much about my own songwriting fails, hope you will also benefit from this!

As a Patreon bonus, we also recorded a 20-minute course/instructional video on drum programming and drumming basics, you can stream and download it here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1EdfqiMjJbTvnNbA8Q5S5aCIXmDo_EWbg?usp=sharing

In this fun video, you will learn how to get started with programming drums as a guitarist - and we also talk about some of the biggest mistakes and how to easily fix them. That will greatly improve your songwriting and arrangement skills!

And as always, I also made a Dropbox link for you: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/lq9qf22888i36m5/AAARQtiSasf7lppXY20hC6Hza?dl=0

P.S.: Don't forget to check out the other home recording courses I made for you:

I think I'll continue to drag and drop stuff that "somewhat matches" and then edit here and there so to curtail the midi to the song. With these midi packs .. I noticed that there's real power in SUBTRACTING drum hits particularly during busy guitar parts .... and then ADDING more hits of fills during whole and half note parts. ((Remember hearing Pete Townsend of The Who praising his bassist John Entwistle for doing this .. essentially taking turns.))

Tomas Tomasovich

Will watch the course ... I spend MUCH time recording my licks and trying to make songs but the whole drum thing is a disaster .. mainly trying to find matching drum loops.

Tomas Tomasovich

Check out Reaper because it is virtually free and the amount of free instruction is amazing. I use Ableton Live, favored by the techno crowd yes, but really geared toward solo artists who create.

Tomas Tomasovich

Awesome! Many thanks!

Menker

We both always use the same sample, but reducing the velocity on the weaker foot with double bass helps to get a more organic sound :)

Bernd Brodträger

Is any difference in left and right kick samples? I saw some YT video, when author programmed drums in Cubase drum editor and in drum map were Right kick on C1 and left kick on B0. Is this important?

Ondra Fejtek

alright! we want more of this! pleeaseee.

Davens Michael

yes this is amazing please do a more advanced lesson on this

Benji Safarik

Also, I would love to see a real process that you followed when you came with drums track ... from thinking to encoding

Michael Pavlovsky

I liked the discussion, please do the deep dive into the differences and most importantly the thinking process behind

Michael Pavlovsky

best advice is to start doing it. after 5 years will be a game changer and valuable skill.

Rylie Franco

Great video and would love to see more on writing drums! I'd love to know a bit more about how to use ghost notes in different contexts. Also I always get confused on how to use the bass drum when writing fills!

Merric

made me laugh you drumming like a little kid , this is great

jaz

Very interesting video. Something that would be really helpfull for me: could you make a cheat-sheet with the basic rhythms shown in the video? Clarification: I'm talking about the long video download.

MF

Awesome! This is so timely. I am a one man metal band and I kinda wing it with the drums programming. This will help me immensely!

Salman Sharif

I don't even know how to use a DAW, much less record something.

David Elliott

Martin

hatyr

Would you ask Makhx what the best introductory drum course/person might be to get started on actually playing drums? I want to try them out :)

Paul Jenkins

The amount of amazing stuff you put out for us is.... well, amazing!
