#227 - Legato Workout Package

Comments

Hey, I think the youtube link for instructions is incorrect? Thank you!

Caisam Yvez Wolf Nopueto

I'm struggling to keep the sound on those long legato lines, is there anything I need to fix to get better and more consistent pull offs or should I just pay close attention to myself and keep trying my hardest to perform good pull offs?

Ben Graham

I took guitar lessons years ago but didn’t learn anything about legato. What can you tell me about it?

adjust the angle of your fingers so theyre more 90 degrees to the string so youre gripping the string with your fingers more

henry Hodgson barratt

i try very hard to get a sound while pulling off but i barely get one and i use the tips of my fingers is there a chance i have very low action and the string has less room to vibrate?

taak

Agreed! Bernth's musical notation is spot on and better than any other I've seen on the internet in my years of doing this.

Jody Tindall

hello bernth, i just got patreon and i have to say i wont regret it. great job,

Kiaan Agrawal

? , in following the tabs how do you know where the hammer ons and pull offs are if it’s not listed ? Appreciate you :D thanks

Hey Alex. The guitarpro files have the hammer-ons and pull-off explicitly notated. The pdfs don't have that extra but they are actually notated correctly - the slur notation (ie the curved lines grouping the notes together) show that these groups are to be played legato - and in the case of guitar the technique is using pull-offs or hammer ons. You pick where the groups are broken, hammer to go up the neck and pull to go down. As an aside: one of the reasons I love Bernth's content is his precise notation and overall organization. Music is notated correctly throughout and downloadable files are named in a logical way etc etc - he really does not take shortcuts. This is surprizingly rare in my experience (even including top schools that rhyme with merkelee. ;-))

In very cases ur guitar is a big problem, I had high action and I couldn't exercise sweep picking because it was very high

Hey Bernth, what is a realistic bpm target for these exercises to chase? 90 bpm works, at 100 bpm the string transitioning is barely working for me, because when I switch strings, I have to speed up the first triplets a tiny bit in order not to loose the beat (for example Exercise 1) - so it kinda loses its legato character a little bit. So my weak point is string jump timings. My approach would be to continue the exercises until I crack it or should I have an eye for something else maybe?

Ronnie

Cool. Beste Grüsse und Happy Day wünscht Dir Jay

Jean-Michel Scheidegger

Jean-Michel Scheidegger

Hi Bernth, Thanks for these great exercises! For exercise 5: Is it allowed to mute the strings (especially h) with the fretting hand?

Stephan

F yeah! Bring it on!

David Elliott

There will be a video about tone this month, can't wait to do this :)

Bernd Brodträger

Hey Bernth, can you give some advice on amp and/or fx settings to optimize legato playing?

David Elliott

After I invested a good amount in alternate and sweep picking, I decided to dive-in deeply in legato. For the few days of practice that I had, the legato workouts helped me so much in my left hand that alternate and sweep picking improved as well.

Devan NC

Yes, Legato is a great choice for your finger technique and there are some great beginner exercises at the start of the course :)

Bernd Brodträger

Would this be good for a beginner to do for a while? I'm practising hand synchronising and alternate picking mainly right now.

Nathan

Hey Joe, that sounds like a noise gate issue, are you currently using one? In case it's your technique, I recommend checking this out: https://www.patreon.com/posts/184-ultimate-30-54171102

Bernd Brodträger

I keep having the volume fade out on extended legato passages. On higher gain and plugged directly into the amp, this isn't as much of an issue, but still exists. Is this due to bad technique or signal loss while going through my pedal board?

Joe Ramirez

Thanks! :)

CaptainHappyTimes

Thank you!

Jeremy Barlock

Hello Jeremy, thanks for sharing this! This way of playing can also be done with acoustic guitar, a clean sound, or without any effects - so it's definitely not the amp or gain setting :) I'd suggest checking out this course (Google Drive link is in the post): https://www.patreon.com/posts/184-ultimate-30-54171102 This one is all about the mechanics of legato and how to get started, hope this will help!!

Bernd Brodträger

#184 is a great start since the course features beginner/intermediate exercises - this workout package is a great follow-up because it's based on more practical licks :)

Bernd Brodträger

Thanks! I'm working with the alternate picking right now... Can't wait to start this one!

Francesco Caravello

Should this be done instead of #184 - Ultimate Legato Workout... or is it a supplement... or should one go through both (more practice is never a bad thing lol)?

CaptainHappyTimes

Bernth - I have been practicing this lesson and realized I am unable to get the same effect illustrated in your video from 8-6-5. It appears you only pick once whereas I have to twice from 6-5 to get a good sound. I am guessing this is the difference in gain. I am only using a fender blues junior. Is there a build or device you suggest that can help with this besides a completely different amp?

Jeremy Barlock

Thanks for listening to the community! I just upgraded my tier to be a part of voting, and because the value you provide to my daily practice routine and motivation in invaluable. Keep doing what you're doing; much appreciation here in Chicago!

Scott Bishop

I'd love to do another in-depth video about the mechanics as well, aside from providing workout packages like this! I'll suggest it on the next voting, let's see if I get to do one :) Thanks for the great input!

Bernd Brodträger

Thank you sir! I will get in this right after I finish the Alternate Picking Masterclass 🤘

LowFrequencyOxidizer

This is awesome! I am curious if you have any tips on how to mitigate unwanted "scraping" noise on low strings when pulling off with higher gain? I am finding that higher gain with wound low strings and callused fingers is a recipe for this, especially when wide spread fingering. I am starting slow, focusing on pulling off cleanly, and noticing improvement, but I'm curious if there is a tip that can help as well that is not immediately obvious to newer players? For "higher gain" I have it set to 5/10 on my amp. I know turning down gain can help, but I figure that if I can play it cleanly with higher gain than I can play it more correctly and avoid bad habits hidden behind cleaner amp settings.

Scott Bishop

nice to see the muting of the D and B strings in Ex. 5, very insightful. Great lesson as always, also for stretching

João Kamradt

thank you ! but how about showing left hand fingering in the tablature

Majdy Obaid

Amazing!

Patrick Rodrigues

A lot of work ... but I love it. Thank you

Michael Pavlovsky

Loving this already. I've been working a lot on legato lately and this has my fingers in knots already!!

Mike Whitla

Bernth keeps on delivering.. happy to be a patreon. Thanks!

Jukka Salin

Noice; can’t wait to get on this. Thanks Bernth!
