#221 - SWEEP PICKING for Beginners | The 5 BEST Exercises!

Hey friends, since I've seen a lot of you working on sweep picking recently, I want to share this hopefully helpful video with you :)  It features a quick breakdown of my personal sweeping journey, as well as 5 killer exercises!

Here are all your practice files for this lesson (play-along videos, tabs, guitar pro files, backing tracks): https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1FT5Ocy8eavlNTE2k21dssUBkf17dRfjh?usp=sharing

I especially recommend the final exercise (this one is a bit challenging) - let me know if you want more modern sweeping ideas like this one aside from the more classic etudes :)

P.S.: Here's a Dropbox folder for you in case Google Drive doesn't work for you: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/m5pwckh98grf3pu/AACPZB82HqWWvrwjQpNMGsJua?dl=0

Where can I buy 2 more frets?

Aoki Ahishatsu

How are you getting that sound with the tapping? Can anyone share tips on sound settings to get that sort of sustain? Thanks!

Jakobe Illich

Sabú (the Lürxx)

Hi! I do think these are exercises for sweep picking-beginners, but they are not an introduction to sweep picking. So you would first have to work through an introduction on how to sweep pick, and THEN you can use these exercises :)

Sabú (the Lürxx)

He says he rolls the finger string to string. No barre

Lance rybka

It was supposed to be for beginners, but started as for experts :-\

Pedram Roosta

Hi all - noob here (still at 40 bpm). On the 3rd, 4th, 5th notes of first run … 14th fret on each string, are you all using the same finger? Barring on B and G string then jumping (same finger) to D string? It looks like Bernth is doing it in the examples that way. It’s a little easier for me to use different fingers for smoothness. Wondering the finger jump feels odd and like it will slow me down when I eventually get faster. Any advice?

Brian Rich

Honestly I am so frickin glad I watched this video. I arrived at the exact same conclusions you reached: trying to build up from a slow sweep with a metronome just wasn't getting me used to a proper sweep motion. I found that after messing around with "fake arpeggios" for a day at a speed I really couldn't play cleanly (aka "raking"), I was able to slow it down and the sweep motion actually felt more natural! I actually kick off every sweep practice session by sweeping all strings open without fretting a few times at different tempos just to get my hand in the right frame of mind. lol It helped me combat the "attack every string" reflex. It's almost like you first need to show your hand what it NEEDS to be doing! haha

Richard Birrittella

Your inspiration just inspired me lmao that's a good choice!

Richard Birrittella

I was trying to think of inspiration from an actual song to help guide my practice and couldn't think of anything for a second, and then went, "Oh, duh; 40 oz by Polyphia lol." Great videos Bernth!

William

Hey Martin, I recorded this video on practicing with a metronome a while back, I think it will help with any technique: https://www.patreon.com/posts/129-5-best-43736958 Hope that helps :)

Bernd Brodträger

Hey Bernth, I've been using the Sweep Picking Technique for several years now, but I lack doing it to a metronome. Do you have any suggestions how to go about it? Start from scratch with your lessons or meticuslously practice with a metronome from slow speeds? Thanks.

Martin Lohmann

Hey Tyler, I suggested string muting and avoiding unwanted noise on the lesson wishlist for this month, let's see how the community decides :) I'd love to do a video on it!

Bernd Brodträger

Hey Bernth, I am having difficulty getting enough volume and have extra string noise when doing a tap like in Exercise 1. How do you cut down on the extra noise? Thank you!

Tyler Ott

I've been trying to sweep pick for about 2 weeks I got it to 130 bpm but still isn't fast enough I'm still learning to sweep with my right hand

Jimmy old school

One thing I found was treating my right hand as I'm using a paint brush or a mop. Thinking that made my right hand more smooth. Now, I just have to synchronize.

FELIX MENDOZA

Took the guitar back again after years, I always enjoyed sweep picking and I'm having fun with this one, Paganini #1 ok at 80BPM for now :) Will you be doing some Jason Becker sweep picking style for beginner ? It'd be cool !

Christophe CHAXEL

Bernth, it is working!

Paul McDonough

Thanks Paul, I switched the link for the 4th time, does it work now? :)

Bernd Brodträger

Still having problems with Dropbox

Paul McDonough

Quick note. Can we have The Summer of Speed and Sequences? ... You all know what I mean!

Lauri Laurila

Hey David, what main exercise are you talking about? I made play-alongs, tabs, guitar pro files with full instrumentation, and backing tracks for everything in the Google Drive & Dropbox folders! Hope that helps

Bernd Brodträger

I’m excited

Crios

I'm talking about the main exercise that he posted on YT. I looked in both Google Drive and Dropbox and do not show a backing track or a play along (with or without guitar). The individual sweep exercises that are Patreon only DO have all of that however (and those are super cool).

David Elliott

All folders in the Google Drive-folder do contain play-along videos and backing tracks. ( Haven't checked the Dropbox link though. )

Robert Bjärmyr

There doesn't seem to be a backing track for this, or a play along video with no guitar. There's the original play along that was posted to youtube and there are backing tracks for the Patreon only exercises.

David Elliott

thanks Bernth... yes, I tried to identify the chord by the notes, but the first section of the second part is (from down to up) C# E A C# A E - and the nearest match for these notes as a chord is the Dmaj9, or F#m9 :D which does not sound perfect with the arpeggio there :D (ok, I mentioned, I am not good enough but at least I tried :D ). Did I do something wrong when tried to identify that bloody chord?

Balázs Takács

When you analyze the arpeggios and the notes (it's just root, third, fifth), you will find the chords easily - to help you out, here's what you could play for that second section: A, D, G, C, Bdim, Am, Bdim, E then back to A :)

Bernd Brodträger

Same here. Have a lot to learn :-(

Dee

Hi Bernth, I love the combined lick! It would be really awesome to get more stuff like this :)

Wolfgang Rauch

Hello Bernth! I have just started to put together a backign track for this Ex2+Ex3, but there is a missing chord... of course, I am not good enough to find them . Could you be please so kind to help me here? Which chords should I use? I started like Amin, E7, Amin, E7, Amin, E7, Amin, E7 then I dont know how... I tried C, Dmin, G, C B, Amin... but I feel it is not correct... Thanks if you'd help me out here :D

Balázs Takács

Yes, more riffs that combine multiple techniques would be great! Thanks for another cool sweep picking lesson!

Greg Conway

Let´s not forget the opening riff of Fetus´s "Pissing In The Mainstream" nearly 4 years earlier than Necro ! Excellent lesson again !!

Dominik Glöckner

Even in 2022, Stabwound is the reason I want to learn to sweep, and Necrophagist songs while doing vocals are my long term goals. Good stuff!

Park James

hi, sorry if i am disturbing ... manage to download everything from google on another computer , regards !

KB

Thanks KB, not sure what's wrong with Dropbox lately! I swapped the link for the third time, does it work for you now? The Drive link works but some devices have issues with accessing it, that's why I provide Dropbox links as well

Bernd Brodträger

hi , the dropbox link is empty ! and i cant access google drive , the only file that can be downloaded is the pdf

KB

what is the sweep picking for intermediate should i be scared , this is great and looks quite challenging cant wait to have a go at the last one when i work to it

jaz

Yoooo this is pretty awesome! I was thinking it'd be quite a while before I even looked at sweep picking but this has just pushed it up the list now hahaha 🤔😂🎸🔥

Ivan V.

Hi Bernth! What definitely made „click“ to me with this technique was your Sweep picking masterclass course. I‘m a beginner hobby player (my fulltime 65h-a-week-job and family won‘t let much time for practicing), so I never thought, I could learn this technique at all. But I was wrong, you and your course proofed me wrong. THANKS FOR THAT!!! As you said, playing slow to a metronome helps a lot, I‘m really not fast yet, but I don‘t have that picking motion problem either 😉😜. And YES: more exercises where sweeping is combined with alternate picking (the transition back and forth can be really hard - especially when different picking angles are required and one tries to stay in time) would be nothing but GREAT 👌🏻!!! Liebe Grüße vom Würzburger Apotheker nach Wien!!!

Michael Sax

Yes, please provide more sweep Picking integration with other skills such as Tapping, Scale Runs, Pedal points, etc

Craig OGorman

I can play in time when sweeping slowly. And I also had that problem of picking each note but now I can sweep over the strings. However, once I speed it up much faster, the timing falls apart and I get that "dead-note mess" that you describe. I keep hoping that it clicks some day.

Scott Walden

As always, my Friday treat. Great lesson Bernth. Going to get on with this one, list is getting longer though.

Steve Shaw

Thanks Gustavo, I just added the GP and PDF file in both folders!

Bernd Brodträger

Thanks Paul, I just added them - now everything is hopefully in order :)

Bernd Brodträger

didn't see any tab PDFs or guitar pro files, are they supposed to be there or just use the videos? :)

Paul Jenkins

Do you have any tips on how to integrate all these exercises into improv at all, i find that it is difficult to understand how i fit these in with say a backing track improv easily?

Zoolrander

Great video! I can't find tabs file...

Gustavo SM

This is one of my worst techniques, so looking forward to this challenge. 🤘🏻

Peter

Been trying to learn a lot of Protest The Hero and their sweeps and licks. All of your videos have helped me get better TREMENDOUSLY!! Excited to do these exercises now.

Alex Lowry

F*ck yeah!!!! I started drowling of sequence of D maj, D aug, D min, D dim :D :D :D Extra thanks for the last exercise (mixed techniques)... I didn't know what to expect when I joined to this patreon site, but there is no regrets in me... just a big gratitude! Thanks boy next door! ;-)

Balázs Takács

Yes. A sweep etude would be nice. As you say. It's mainly just pratice and not putting it to use.

Arvid Richter

This is going to help so much! Thanks Bernth!

Andrew Acosta

Hey friends, looks like there was an issue with the Dropbox link - I just swapped it, let me know if everything works :) Hope you all have an amazing weekend!!

Bernd Brodträger

Geiler Scheib! I require all the sweeps, i thirst for them🤘👽🤘
