#216 - Guitar Exercises Ranked By Importance

Happy Friday, my friends! While I'm currently hard at work concerning your wishlist topics, I'd like to go over a topic that has been requested quite often in general - how do you decide which exercises to actually work on regularly?

Here are your practice files (exercise video play-alongs, tabs, guitar pro files, backing tracks), I added the original lesson number to each folder: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/16gXk2xhDatX6S_UMFN9IzaedxCTxt0mw?usp=sharing

In this video, I'd like to share how I would personally rank some popular exercises we looked at over the years. I hope this helps you with making your own routine much more effective :)

By the way, here's a Dropbox folder in case Google Drive doesn't work for you: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ol9sgvj262l3hq3/AABe0ASZsoNO38qAUmFNyCexa?dl=0

#216 - Guitar Exercises Ranked By Importance

Comments

Hi BERNTH, I downloaded all the exercises and then watched the explanatory video. You provided on Google-Drive 10 exercises. But in your graph there are 11 exercises. What is the exercise that you located in the temporarily area?

Hans-Werner Zöllner

I have watched a lot of "tier list" style videos, and i always think they should have a capacity for the top 3 ranks. Otherwise everything ends up in S tier a lot of the time!

honkycat

Start slow! Playing lower tempos is BORING but it forces patience and reenforces timing.

Adam Deacon

If you feel like you mastered them already, you can definitely look for more challenging workouts on the page or push the tempo further :) 1-2h of just sweeping seems excessive though, make sure to get a balanced routine based on all techniques and theory skills you will need on your personal journey! Just my input :)

Bernd Brodträger

Do you think there's a point of diminishing returns with doing exercises? Been doing your sweep picking lessons for 1-2 hours a day. Would you recommend that or should I shorten my routine?

Jonny Simons

I like the Paganini - Moto Perpetuo exercise, found it at the perfect time. It hits just the right weak spots I have while being a lot of fun to play. Occasionally it makes me feel like I almost deserve to own a guitar. 5/5

I just think a daily workout needs bends 😊

Andrew Wilkinson

Hi bernth another great video BUT..........where are the expression melodic exercise workout ideas based in actual playing of music , like various arpeggios done only in various pitch bends ? With the vibrato , like maybe what David Gilmour and Gary Moore do lol

Andrew Wilkinson

Hello, it's the first thing that pops up when you search for 'CAGED' on the page: https://www.patreon.com/posts/176-3-best-solo-52915479 The link is in the post!

Bernd Brodträger

That's actually a great video topic Chris! I'll add it to the next voting, I'd love to discuss this in detail!

Bernd Brodträger

I'd love to do more neoclassical shredding at some point in the future 🤘

Nvm. 50 Guitar Techniques in 3 Minutes! #1

Rational Gaze

That wild sweep picking lick Bernth runs through right around the three minute mark, what lesson is that from??

Rational Gaze

Any chance in turning the Paganini exercise into a full cover?? I absolutely love this piece :D I know the Bernth already made an Caprice 24 cover, but there is never enough of Paganini :D

Marco

Very useful Chris, thank you and thank you Bernth too ^^

Hey, question for all, including Bernth. How does everyone practice their exercises within a routine? I know, with the challenge videos, we start at, let's say, 50 bpm and go up from there. So, is the best way to start slow and work up, or start at the bpm you can play fast and controlled, than work up from there? All thoughts appreciated.

Chris Agoglia

Thanks a lot Bernth, but I was wondering where is the caged exercises routine? I’m just too bad at music theory 😩

Thanh Nguyen

Made a grid for the video Daily 182 112 104 206 Often 143 135 Occasionally 176 119 123 Temporarily Rarely 115

Kris Stengel

Thanks for asking Andrea, great eye for detail! It was a section about learning the triads on the neck, it ended up being a bit boring and with nothing important/exciting about it other than you should learn them for a while - then you will see them :)

Bernd Brodträger

Thanks so much for sharing this Brandon! Here's the full video, I think the post should feature all files associated with these workouts :) https://www.patreon.com/posts/206-technique-89-60124476

Bernd Brodträger

Thanks a lot for the summary of all topics :)

many thanks Bernth...very very useful

I had a hard time remembering which screenshot of Bernth's guitar closeup related to which exercise, so I made a list :D (I hope I got it right) Daily: 182 Finger Exercise, 112 Paganini, 104 7 Group, 206 Legato Often: 143 Arpeggio Picking, 135 Sweeping Occasionally: 176 CAGED, 119, 4NPS, 123 String Skipping Temp: not sure, somehow I can't figure out which one this was Rarely: 115 Rhythm Time to update my routine!

Chris Lee

Hello Bernth! I was wondering if there was a reason that PDF files were not included in the legato exercise folder? I really appreciate this guidance on practice routines. This is a particularly important issue that I believe needs more attention from teachers. It has been easy for me to start with good intentions, but it's not hard to get off track. Thanks for sharing, as usual, your lessons are superior to others I have seen.

Brandon Roth

Hey Jaz! That's awesome you keep a practice routine log. I've been thinking I need to do that more myself. I've been really itching for a new computer to get a DAW going and kind of jump into the digital world more of guitar playing. I may even need to activate my Facebook again so I can join the VIP group. Seems better than paying for guitar lessons form someone. I love how Bernth has laid things out for us on here.

Rob Lee

Who else wants more hrs in the day 😂

jaz

Me too haha you’ve seen my vids rob I’m onto everything and everything 😂 but I have a system and progress every day

jaz

This is me too always follow Bernth 🤘🏼

jaz

I been playing almost 2 years and my routine consists of warm up with some strumming chords progressions songs riffs whatever really , alternate picking ( transitions, speed , timing , hand sync etc ) sweep picking ( slow , comfortable tempo , and push at the end ) legato ( start with the basics and then hit a challenge or some long lines focusing on relaxed , economy of motion A light touch and the pinky ) usually finish with some improv and theory drills And always mix it up been into the tapping lately and just having some fun with everything and anything Around 20-3o mins each or some days 5 mins some days couple hrs depending on time I have improved so much in such a short time doing this I been keeping a practice log for about 5-6 months now It’s a great motivator and awesome to look back on stuff and progress Hope this helps bruv

jaz

I’m surprised there is no speed workout hahah Love this This is pretty much a piece of my routine You’re my mr miyagi Thank you Bernth

jaz

Man, this is excellent. I love seeing how a pro like Bernth prioritizes his practice schedule. I’m still really new to playing with less than 2 years under my belt but this is helping so much by taking the guess work out of what I should be working on. I think I hyper focus on one technique too much where I’ll do something like alternate picking for 30 days for about an hour a day. Surprisingly, the challenge of increasing BPMs keeps me from getting bored and I enjoy practice. But I may benefit more by creating a regiment where I alter what I’m working on each day instead of just going HAM on one technique or idea. I’d imagine it’ll make me much more well rounded in the long run. Do any more experienced players have thoughts on this?

Rob Lee

Thank you so much for this video!! sorry..but what is temporarily exercise?

andrea boscariol

I’m in the same boat. It’s all legato and sweeping at the moment. I’m beginning to have that ‘finally seeing some progress!’ Moment. Feels good

Lukezo

Yes, man, yes! Thanks for that :-)

Dee

Once again, just like the coffee I'm drinking, this is exactly what I needed! I'm happy to see that I've been practicing a few of these "often". I'm in the midst of a relocation process so life is chaotic, but thanks to Bernth, my practice doesn't have to be 🥳🤟🏻

Eric Bailey

Thank you so much for posting this video. I'm in the process of trying to figure out what to practice and how to organize that practice and then I see this video. This is a great start for me and I'll adjust it as I go along. Once again, thank you.

William L Williams

Thank you Bernth. Happy friday fr you too 😁

I'm currently in a "do all the things!" phase ... :D But legato and sweeping is definitely in my top tier zone as well. Legato is excellent in developing finger strength, timing and indepence, especially when performed at "uncomfortable" tempos - i.e too slow or too fast. :)

Robert Bjärmyr

This has been a big struggle of mine; I’m like a kid in a candy store and want to practice everything all the time. Thanks for this roadmap, it is definitely going to focus my practice!

Thank you Bernth!
