#215 - 5 BIG Mistakes ALL Self-Taught Guitarists Make!

To start this month with something very special, I'd like to show you some exercises in my personal routine at the moment, and why I especially recommend them to self-taught guitarists!

Here are your practice files for this video (exercise video play-alongs, backing tracks, tabs, guitar pro files): https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1SFUEDikAWfzgdTyXrQTm_-YDJDLCyrBY?usp=sharing

I especially recommend the tricky but awesome alternate picking/sweeping/theory workout (exercise #3) - this one has tons of benefits for your technique and fretboard visualization skills :) You can change the tempo to your liking with the guitar pro file, make sure to start slow, and work your way up the BPM ladder!

P.S.: Here's a Dropbox link in case Google Drive doesn't work for you: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/2r9axq2wa2542fi/AAAkcig9xyx6MV-dyTbjmXbxa?dl=0

#215 - 5 BIG Mistakes ALL Self-Taught Guitarists Make!

Comments

yes, as written, it's a Adim arpeggio ( A C Eb Gb). the rest of exercise 3 is correct. Likely a simple copy/paste error.

Jon Anglin

I saw this too. I believe that arpeggio should be shifted down a half step, so that the second note lands on that B. Instead of 12 to 15, it should start 11 to 14. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

dan

bernth i can play block 1 at 110 bpm but its sloppy . its coming along well been working on this one from 40 bpm going up 10s , 110 is my push tempo 40 to 80 is comfortable . my wrist just needs to catch up

jaz

I was wondering about this too. I’ve been starting on the 14th fret, which would give us B-D-F-B-D-F-G#. It’s essentially the same as what you suggested but it starts with the root and only has one G#(Ab) on the high e string. To me this makes more sense since you have the B-D-F notes twice, outlining the chord, and only one G#. You could also take an extra challenge instead of the G#, you hit the B on the high e (19th fret) to make it a perfect B-D-F-B-D-F-B.

Silph Scope

Bernth I can play it at 100 decent The120 is killer but I can play it if I put it to 75% speed Been working hard out on the up slant

jaz

This one is not so much about speed, if you get it clean at 120-130BPM you are already doing really great :)

Bernd Brodträger

how fast do you end up playing exercise 1 bernth?

jaz

Guilty as charged, gotta get rid of the old habits :D About the horse... well it's more like a pony, maybe a bit cursed. The Nazgul could ride with that one in Lords of the Ring :')

Serdar Ilter

Hello, in exercise 3 , I don't understand why the first arpeggio is called Bdim when there is no B played ? Thank you for your help

Nicolas Farrenq

I'm excited for what is coming next week, but Tyler, check out #200. I found it really interesting on the "what" and "why"... the "how" at really fast speeds I'm still trying to figure out.

scott

Coming next week! :)

Bernd Brodträger

Hey Bernth! Do you have past lessons about the upstroke and downstroke escapes? Thanks!

Tyler Ott

I enjoyed playing Long Train Runnin' when I studied at the conservatory - it's also not exactly a Rock/Metal song but not that bad for trying out some patterns based around the main riff :)

Bernd Brodträger

I hope its not bad form to post this but Chris Buono is a good modern funk player. I

Hi Bernth, I'd really love to extend my repertoire with some Funk guitar stuff (as shown here in the vid) and I recently checked out some Funk music on Spotify, but I struggle so hard with finding material to play. Most Funk songs I find tabs for are really old or have that "gospel-style" sound or only use guitars sparingly in the background, but I'd like to go for more modern Funk songs with the main focus on guitar. Do you have any sources or starting point on how to start with such music?

Fhynix

I noticed that too. There were also some sloppy edits in this video. I'm betting he has a lot of other stuff going on in his life right now and had to rush to put this together.

Rational Gaze

Maybe you could do a follow up video on the difference between the diminished triad which fits over the locrian mode, and the 4 note diminished scale that only fits over the harmonic minor scales 2nd, 4th, 6th and 7th modes.

Rational Gaze

Thank you Bernth !

RICHARD A MARKS

Great tips and an awesome horse!

Keith Fine

I’ve definitely made a few of these for sure

Soulless Shredder

This is exactly what I needed to start making progress thanks

Blake Syrnyk

Awesome vid, as usual. The drawing bit was genius haha :)

Aaron Shepanik

Hi Bernth! I'm confused with the Bdim of the Exercice 3. in sweep it is A C Eb A C Eb Gb wich is a Cdim. Shall we start at the 11th fret of the A string instead of 12 fret? in this case we will have Ab B D Ab B D F (7b / 1 / 3m/7b/1/3m/5m) with is the Bdim

kevin Dumont

How do you guys count 16th note triplets? I use bid-a-lee did-a-lee as a phrase for them.

Zack

Love the metaphor with drawing. Genius angle!!! Need contest for the picture😉

Darkboar

Hey Bernth! Really enjoyed the takeaways from this video! Any plans on playing in the United States? Really would enjoy seeing you in a live show! Plus it would be cool to actually meet you!!

Paul E. Kubiak

I really gave it my best haha! :)

Bernd Brodträger

Thank you Brandon! I think it's really interesting to study as many different approaches as possible - but you're right, in a practical situation I almost always go for alternate picking instead of economy picking for example. But it did give me some cool licks and ideas that I wouldn't have found if I had never chosen to work on this technique! So kind of difficult to answer I guess :)

Bernd Brodträger

Awesome lesson once more. Danke.

Evan

you can draw too what cant you do haha cant wait to get onto this later today es[pecially the sweep

jaz

That horse! :'D

Robert Bjärmyr

VLC. It allows to speed up or slow down the video with (mostly) correct pitch. :)

Robert Bjärmyr

What do you all use to play the backing track mp4?

Mitch

Thank you for your continued insights! You are, in my opinion, one of the greats in terms of ability and teaching. I remember hearing a theory years ago that it is best to stick with one type of picking technique as learning several can "confuse our brain" especially when we get to the higher speeds. I wonder if perhaps mastering one technique would be wise before learning another. What are your thoughts?

Brandon Roth

I think my favorite part of this video is the guitar strap in the live performances. It is not discussed in the video, but I don't see how one can play with reliable technique when the guitar is at knee height. Bernth showed that you don't have to look "cool" to sound amazing. Now shorten your strap and l2p.

Another awesome lesson, Bernth! I am also self-taught... since 1984 (yikes!). My playing took a turn for the worse back in 2017 when I had the pretty awesome opportunity to take lessons from a world known heavy metal guitarist who was an absolute stickler for technique. The only problem was, his picking technique sucked and I got worse and worse the longer I took lessons from him. As my playing degraded, I started really watching his live concerts and he was actually quite sloppy and inconsistent live. So I quit taking lessons from him. Unfortunately, I struggled horribly to get back to the natural technique I had and my playing suffered. Since I found your YouTube Channel and started following you on Patreon, things are definitely getting back on-track. The right teacher makes all the difference in the world. Many thanks, Bernth :)

Michael Alden

The big take away from this video is that Bernth reaffirmed that I'm an awesome person 🥳🤟🏻😂

Eric Bailey

that Pferd only makes metal gallops

Jose llopis temes

Thank you Bernth! Thank you!

Alex History

Welp, i haven't watched this yet, but as a self taught for 25 years before I joined this amazing community over 1 and 1/2 years ago, i have a feeling this one is gonna be brutal😂🤣 In a good way im sure. I always knew i was cutting corners and learning bad habits, Bernth has been amazing at pointing that out to me with every lesson🤦‍♂️ I cant wait to see what fixes are in store for me with this one!!!🤘👽🤘
