#212 - STOP Picking Like This (SAVE YOUR WRIST!)

Happy Friday my friends :) I'd like to start the month off with some killer picking exercises! You sent me a lot of questions about the wrist motion recently, often with a bit of frustration concerning speed and control - sometimes even mentioning pain or a weird burning sensation in your forearm. So I thought making this video is actually quite important :)

Here are all your practice files (exercise play-alongs, tabs, guitar pro files, backing tracks): https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/10W6A1kUUbk54HvNMsWJwWT7gTdYgYgRZ?usp=sharing

Hope you have tons of fun refining your picking motion! I will post the next lesson wishlist for February tomorrow, can't wait to see how you decide. There's actually also a big surprise coming next week, a show that has been in the making for months - but I won't spoil the surprise and just wish you a happy weekend!

By the way, here's a Dropbox folder in case Google Drive doesn't work for you: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/mr1cg5kaonjkcwe/AACzzFAtOMXmSlGHsD50Y4Ima?dl=0

#212 - STOP Picking Like This (SAVE YOUR WRIST!)

In the second exercise I find it very difficul not to play the first note on the e-string downwards.

Tomi Haapa-alho

I'm a bit old to the party as I've recently joined... but these exercises are awesome! The second one is really annoying as I can transition strings just fine with economy picking but alternate picking messes me up so much. Any tips anyone?

Rodrigo Nikolof

Hi Bernth ! I'm very excited to try this work out! I've been stuck around 90 bpm with my alternative picking for quite some time so I decided to join your Patreon. Thank you for the detailed lessons! Time to practice :)

Nicolai Rentrer

Thanks for sharing that Aaron, great to hear :)

Bernd Brodträger

Hi, I've just got to say how much i've improved with your videos. Speed picking, tremolo, sweeps, all of it! I am still not technically there, but the improvements are huge!! Ty very much for your amazing content Bernth!

Aaron Tubbs

I'd love to, I'll put it on the next lesson voting :)

Bernd Brodträger

Hello Bernth! This video unlocked some stuff for me. Even if you didn't talk (afaik) about it, I'm referring to the very very very subtle movements you make for your altpick. I use to go with a much more wide movement and maybe this is stopping me from progressing. It could be a nice idea for a video on how to reduce your picking movement! Cheers, best guitar youtube teacher in the web!

Alejandro Seguí

Bernth, I know you have lessons on pressing too hard on the fretboard as playing but I am still having issues and I do not like damaging my frets? Can you give more lessons on this?

Jason Schusster

Would finger grips improve wrist motion?

Jim Maize

This is great! one thing I cant seem to do is to break past 40 bpm is to pull my 3rd and 4th fingers off the strings to play some of the exercises and im not to sure how to help build strength in them. I find that when doing exercises my pinky and 3rd finger often just fall into place whilst most of the conscious work is done by the first or 2nd finger so when using just the 3rd and 4th I'm struggling to control them

Dan Shipway

I'd love to do a video on this, thanks so much for the input! :)

Bernd Brodträger

you can also make the play along video slower (or make it faster) by 10% at a time with the VLC player.. I practice like this cause I always like playing along with Bernth far more than the guitar pro file..

I echo Oliwer’s question, I wonder what Bernth’s view is…

I'd recommend checking this out :) https://www.patreon.com/posts/164-most-daily-5-49975996

You can change the tempo with the guitar pro files :)

Bernd Brodträger

Bernth, This so damn good. I wish there was a 60 bpm version to help me get to 80bpm. I like to why there is not. You are a awesome teacher!!!!!!!

Jason Schusster

That's a good point and suggestions, thanks. The full story is that I used to anchor my pinky and ring fingers and when doing that, it was easier to tremolo pick multiple strings at higher tempos. However, after concluding that anchoring is not necessarily the best habit and watching Bernth's lessons, I'm trying to adopt his picking technique - with good results, but struggling with this particular pattern, hence my question :)

Oliwer

Welcome back man, long time no see!

Bryan Butler

Awesome - thanks again, Bernth🎸🤟... If possible, could we maybe include harmonics techniques (specially pinch harmonics) on the list? Having you guide us on this stuff, and specially on creating exercise patterns to integrate them properly, would be amazing 😅

Ivan V.

Exercise 3 at 100 bpm... that's a tricky one! :O Edit: Just tried #5 at 110... :']

Robert Bjärmyr

If you think about the physical distance the pick needs to travel and effort required to "turn" the pick with the higher speed necessary to hit multiple strings, you're kind of picking at the equivalent of 3*150 BPM... Not really, of course - but it's at least double the effort. :) If the drums and bass are going full blast and possibly the other guitar goes single string, it could be an option to tremolo chords at half speed, or possibly play chords on the first beat of every bar and single string the rest etc. It all boils down to the material, I guess. :)

Robert Bjärmyr

awesome as always jumping straight on them thank you so much bernth

jaz

Another great video!!

Rob Lee

Thanks for the great video, Bernth! Recently I've been working a lot on improving my picking technique and your lessons are invaluable. Would you have an advice on tremolo picking multiple strings at higher tempos? For instance, picking 2-3 strings at the same time in ~150 BPM. I find it way more difficult than picking single strings and I was wondering how I could improve it.

Oliwer

Duuuuude! I feel offended! Just kidding. :P Awesome exercises and as always - pretty much spot on! Will be adding these to my daily routine a.s.a.p. :D

Robert Bjärmyr

Hi Bernth, did you install cameras in my room? Once again, this is EXACTLY what I'm working on currently! While I still struggle to find my perfect pick grip and wrist/forearm angle, there's something I'd love to know: You said that you use a different technique for different tempi. Is this the same with the pick grip? Do you switch that too, ESPECIALLY when going for something completely different such as palm-muted powerchords or downstroke-heavy passages (think of Master of Puppets or similar)? I currently struggle with finding a pick grip and wrist/forearm angle that I feel comfortable with for everything on the guitar...

Fhynix

Great stuff! The need to change my motion when the speed increases is something I recognized but I don't know HOW to change it! So, let's hope I FEEL the answers when practicing these excerises! THANK YOU! (By the way: I would be extremely greatful, if anybody could tell me which preset of which EZMix package produces at least roughly the sound we hear in the video! ;-) )

Stephan

Bernth you are the best, thank you so much!!! It's just amazing, you said everything I feel every day! There are no words to convey my gratitude to you!

Alex History

Yes mode linking excercise plz

Andrew Jones

Thanks BERNTH! Hey would you do a practice video on different exercises linking the modes?? Have a good day coach!
