#202 - 10 Life-Changing Guitar Technique Hacks!

It's time for a big one - this week is all about technique again! You voted for string muting, avoiding unwanted noise, picking technique, and many other topics this month - so I did my best to put together the ULTIMATE technique video so far :)

This one features some topics we never really talked about and I hope it helps you out a lot on your journey! Get all your practice files here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1YePX3TojgNMiBxLngxmYpFUDSvfR4B58?usp=sharing

I'm currently putting an awesome course together for you for next week, about a special technique I got a lot of questions and messages about :) Can't wait to share this with you! Until then, I hope you have tons of fun working on your technique.

P.S.: Here's a Dropbox link in case Google Drive doesn't work for you: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/7j8j7jyivoqum4y/AADUgznngao-wRV6M0Mb4IENa?dl=0

#202 - 10 Life-Changing Guitar Technique Hacks!

Comments

Ah, thank you.

Andrew Whitfield

Hey Andrew, I discussed this here, 3 minutes in: https://www.patreon.com/posts/198-3-picking-57884181

Bernd Brodträger

One other thought on this… also the picking hand position as you play on the power strings. For instance, I can get my picking hand pretty comfortable on the guitar on the higher strings. But as I get lower, not only an I struggling with the thicker strings, but also where to place my picking hand. Thanks again :)

Andrew Whitfield

Thanks for sharing this Andrew! Do you mean the right hand (picking hand)? My wrist/palm is in contact with the bridge at almost all times (I think the only real exception is strumming chords) and I also don't like to anchor with my fingers below the strings :) Hope this helps, this would be another great video topic - thanks for the input!

Bernd Brodträger

Apologies if I’ve missed this or it’s in another video. But I’m wondering how you anchor your left hand to the guitar. I can’t tell if your hand is floating and it’s the elbow that has primary contract. Or if your palm is on the bridge or edge of strings. Thank you. These lessons are gold. And have made such a difference in the short time I’ve been here. All the best.

Andrew Whitfield

Thanks for asking Scott! No, this is not about using the downward angle exclusively and avoiding an upward angle - it's about avoiding an angle that is exactly parallel to the strings :) The point is not in which direction the tip of the pick is facing, it's about the surface of the pick lining up exactly with the string (that's what I personally can't recommend for fast playing - I think some call it 'flat picking'). Hope this helps :)

Bernd Brodträger

So Tip 5 recommends using a downward pick angle vs horizontal to help in fast string transitions, regardless of the phrase... which actually helps me lot. In the Pick Angle lesson however, wasn't it recommended to use a horizontal angle for even note phrases and a downward angle for odd note phrases? Am I misinterpreting? Just looking to make sure I understand so I can practice correctly. Thanks!

scott

I'd love to do another sweeping video with a focus on technique and picking! I will suggest it on the next voting for sure, let's see how the community decides :) Sweeping at an angle helps with going over the strings fluidly, but it's a bit different from alternate picking - hope I can talk about it more soon!

Bernd Brodträger

Bernth do you still angle your pick when sweep picking?

Another great technical video!

Chris Claxton

Thanks! Every tip is very helpful!!! Do you have another tip for the picking hand. How to play from the wrist and not from the elbow. I can't master that if it's getting a little bit faster my wrist is like a tree trunk...

Wolfgang

Right there with you, Steve!

Michael Latham

These tips, and all your videos, are such a great help! I really love how you put musical thought into your exercises, and not just "Here are some scales. Play them until you have them memorized..." I've tried learning/improving my playing from a few guitarists on YouTube/Patreon, but only you and Ben Eller really give me excersizes that I'm excited to play and (once I get through the initial struggle) enjoy playing. 🍻

Michael Latham

It depends on the Technik, not on the size of the hammer. xD Yeah my english skill rockz. But honestly. Can confrim trick 4. Playing relaxed. I´m doing an classification test for the new music academy right now, and have to record an cover song of my choice. Well as a student of Bernth my eager goal is to be fu**** good.^^ There was a short 8 note speed lick in my recording that I had not been able to master. I realized that I was more and more cramped with each try.. My solution was to pay attention beeing cool and relaxed.. I can say it worked and that is one message of Bernths recent Lesson i think: Sometimes we are physically and psyochologically not relaxed enough to master our goals. Thanks for reading :p

Hans Seestaller

Great lesson as always.

Evan

You are making us all better guitarists Bernth with these fantastic lessons, wish I was 40 years younger.

Ich mag, wie du das beispiel mit schlechte technik machst spielen und dann du machst perfekt ^_^

Jose llopis temes

You should totally stop explaining bad habits like "If you do this, you won't be able to play, look..." and then nailing everything you play :-P

Fhynix

im a huge technik nerd i love this stuff

jaz

These tips will improve my technik I can tell already!

John H

Another awesome video! These exercises have really helped me progress at a much faster rate when applying them to a daily routine. Slowly stepping away from being a beginner to intermediate player and enjoying the journey. Also, the tisch is looking really nice with the racks now!

Rob Lee

This lesson is gold. Thanks Bernth!

Edwin van Slingerlandt

All the technik I can handle and you present it in one video. String noise is my #1 aggravation now that I'm trying to speed up my playing.

Mark McNish

Thanks so much Berneth, hope next week technique would be about Economy picking (directional picking) this one about muting strings and avoiding noises is awesome thanks!!! :)
