#196 - 3 tricks that INSTANTLY improve your TIMING!

My friends, you voted for a video on downstrokes, rhythm guitar, and timing - so I'm happy to deliver 3 awesome exercises just in time for the weekend :)

Here are all your practice filesfor this lesson (video play-alongs, backing tracks, tabs, guitar pro files, Konnakol beginner sheet): https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1-DvMMK0pEOdY1gaAOE2H88Wv9r6ODlfM?usp=sharing

The exercises and overall practice concepts are all about developing a better sense of rhythm, something we often neglect in our routines :) I included downstroke/alternate picking transitions, note value switching, odd note grouping, and other cool ideas to make it interesting, and I hope you have tons of fun practicing this!

Next week will be really exciting - I will share a lesson that's been in the making for several days now (based on multiple topics from your current wishlist) AND there's also a new music video coming on Saturday - exciting times ahead!!

Excellent lesson! For me 50% of the lessons here should have as a subject the rhythm and timing. An online course with a combination of riffs and how to create licks or even better creating a full solo over them would be much appreciated. Actually if you had different courses for 4/4 and interesting groupings and another one for odd rhythms and then playing licks and solo over them, it would be simply PERFECT! You have a drummer somewhere hidden... It's time to utilize him. :-) Cheers.

mmmm, I need come back to this, it took some time but its seem to pay off, I am not there yet for sync and string skipping but it seems that I am closing in on my current speed with ease... On a single string I increased my speed with almost 20%... So yeah there is some truth to this what initially I didn't believe. It seems also for now that I play much faster form the first to the 6th than the other way around. It needs to sink in further.

I also do this, and I've seen it recommend AND not-recommended. It's a life-saver for me though! If I pick with my fist I play with all the delicacy of the Hulk

Jordan Summers

i've tried to pick with a fist, but I have learned over time to use my pinky to anker on the body, which I use to lift my hand for open and muted notes. If I play fast alternate between open and muted notes, my hand hovers over the strings without anker, and that throws me completely off. I have tried that for a couple of weeks but it gets me no where. My speed drops and well my playing becomes messy. Unless I am missing something out of the equation.

You get slightly different deadnote sounds with different hand positions, I love to experiment with that if the tempo of the riff allows it :)

Bernd Brodträger

I love the first two exercises! Question on exercise 1 though. Why do you always move your hand up around the 5 fret for the muted triplets? If they're muted, wouldn't they sound the same, and be easier to play, if you muted on the 7th fret after that first un-muted chord?

Jeffrey Harmon

Very good lesson! Getting some Chimaira vibes from this!

Dan Hughes

Lots of fun playing the odd timing signatures. It’s challenging and I need to start recording myself to see where I’m landing. Thanks Bernth!!!

Great lesson, there is not playalong video of the three exercises?

Vincenzo

Hello, very helpful lesson... I play thrash/death metal and these rhythm based exercises are mind blowing... As italian, I always used town names: "Ro-me", "Na-po-li", "Bar-ce-lo-na"... and so on...:)

this is way too hard for me but ill have a go after work , any tips thanks

Yep, another great video lesson, it is something I need to really work on

Steve Shaw

I'm in a very similar boat! I can play well by feel with bandmates but as soon as they start asking me to change things up or I try to count things out to be specific about things I lose it. So I've been working on really trying to count things out as I play and get that in my head, but it's been really difficult. Looking forward to adding these exercises to my practice and seeing if it helps!

Ryan Arana

You make the rhythmus look so easy I need to work more on my rhythm Thank you for these insane videos as always 😃🤙🏼

Very “timely” video as I’m really struggling with good timing. I know conceptually how timing works but when i throw that metronome on and try to sync up with it my counting in my head just doesn’t click yet. I’ve tried the “oneEandaTwoEandA” and the “tripALetTripALet” phrases but being able to start on the 2 or 3 and keeping good timing is not going well. Will be trying this approach and your words given and look forward to other exercises and tips in future videos as these are the most helpful for me ! Thanks

Paul Jenkins

i'm learning to sing, sightread and count rythmn better, this will help me.. Besides, i was very interested in Konnakol so kudos to you for this one :)
